Employer of record in Ireland
Employing someone in Ireland through an employer of record: employer PRSI with no ceiling, the auto-enrolment pension that started in 2026, the minimum wage, 4 weeks' leave, probation, notice, redundancy pay and sick pay.
Checked on 16 October 2026. The headline rules for a standard employee, from official sources where they opened and law firm, PwC or specialist publisher guides where they didn't; each line names its source. Sectors, collective agreements and contracts can change them. This is general information, not legal advice.
Know this first
- Employment isn't at will: once unfair dismissal protection applies, a dismissal is presumed unfair unless the employer can show substantial grounds.
- Budget 2027 announced a €14.94 minimum wage from 1 January 2027, which still needs legislation, and a further PRSI rise from 1 October 2027.
- The government mentions an €80,000 earnings threshold for auto-enrolment contributions; we couldn't open the detail, so check it with your provider.

- Employer costs on top of salary
- 11.40% employer PRSI from 1 October 2026 (11.25% before), or 9.15% where weekly pay is €552 or less. There's no earnings ceiling. The employee pays 4.35%. Auto-enrolment (MyFutureFund) started on 1 January 2026: for staff aged 23 to 60 earning over €20,000 a year who aren't in a workplace pension, the employer matches the employee's 1.5% of gross pay, rising to 6% over 10 years. - Minimum wage
- €14.15 an hour for adults (20 and over) from 1 January 2026, with lower rates under 20. Irish Statute Book, S.I. 472/2025, Citizens Information, minimum wage, October 2026
- Holiday
- 4 working weeks a year, plus 10 public holidays. For each public holiday the employer gives a paid day off, an extra day's leave or an extra day's pay. Citizens Information, annual leave, Citizens Information, public holidays
- Working hours
- An average of 48 hours a week, usually measured over 4 months. There's no legal right to extra pay for overtime. Department of Enterprise, terms and conditions of employment, Citizens Information, working hours
- Probation
- Up to 6 months, or up to 12 in exceptional cases where it's in the employee's interest. Irish Statute Book, S.I. 686/2022, Citizens Information, contracts, August 2026
- Notice from the employer
- 1 week after 13 weeks' service, 2 weeks after 2 years, 4 weeks after 5, 6 weeks after 10 and 8 weeks after 15. Longer notice in the contract applies instead. Workplace Relations Commission, ending employment
- Severance
- Statutory redundancy pay after 2 years' service: 2 weeks' pay per year of service plus one extra week, counting weekly pay up to €600. Unfair dismissal protection starts after 12 months, or from day one for some reasons, such as pregnancy. Citizens Information, redundancy pay, Citizens Information, unfair dismissal
- Extra pay the law requires
- We found no legal requirement for a 13th month or Christmas bonus. Sunday work needs an allowance, a pay rise or paid time off, unless the contract already covers it. Citizens Information, working hours
- Contract
- The core terms, including pay and hours, must be given in writing within 5 days of starting, and the rest within a month. We found no rule on language. Citizens Information, contracts, August 2026
- Payroll and tax
- The employer registers with Revenue, deducts income tax, PRSI and USC, and reports each payment to Revenue on or before payday. A payslip is due every payday. We found no rule on how often staff must be paid. Citizens Information, employer obligations, Revenue, payroll submissions
- Sick pay
- Paid by the employer: 5 days a year at 70% of normal pay, up to €110 a day, after 13 weeks' service. The state's Illness Benefit can take over from day 6. Citizens Information, sick pay, Department of Enterprise, April 2025
