Thailand digital nomad visa (DTV)

Thailand's Destination Thailand Visa covers remote work in its "workcation" category. It lasts five years, with stays of up to 180 days at a time, and you need 500,000 baht in the bank rather than an income.

At a glance

The visa
Destination Thailand Visa (DTV)
What you need
About $14,890 in savings (THB 500,000); in pounds, about £11,190 in savings
What counts as proof
Bank statements. Some embassies ask for three months, others six.
Who can apply
Employees of a company abroad: yes. Freelancers: yes. Owners of a company abroad: yes.
How long
Five years, 180 days a visit, extendable once by 180
Without a visa
British and American visitors: 30 days, down from 60 on 15 September 2026

The catch. Since 31 August 2026 you need a criminal record certificate, and you must apply in a country where you are a citizen or permanent resident, so a border run no longer works.

How to apply

  1. Apply online on the Thai e-Visa portal, to the embassy for the country where you're a citizen or permanent resident.
  2. You can't apply from inside Thailand, and since 31 August 2026 a trip to a neighbouring country to apply no longer works.
  3. The embassy may email you for more papers or an interview.
  4. Each entry lets you stay up to 180 days, which you can extend once, by 180 days, at an immigration office.

Fees and timing

UK
£300.
Singapore
SGD 500.
Switzerland, Finland, Hungary
CHF 350 or EUR 350.
Extending a stay
THB 1,900, the standard extension fee.
How long it takes
No official figure. The Singapore embassy says apply at least 21 working days before you travel. Fees aren't refunded.

The documents

The main items. Your consulate's own checklist is the one that counts, so check it before you start.

  • Passport valid six months, and a recent photo
  • Proof you're a citizen or permanent resident where you apply
  • 500,000 baht in the bank: three or six months of statements, depending on the embassy
  • Proof of remote work: an employer's contract or letter, a freelancer's portfolio and invoices, or your company's papers and tax return
  • A criminal record certificate (London wants one issued in the last six months)
  • A booking for where you'll stay

Health insurance

None of the embassy checklists we read ask for it.

Family, renewing and tax

Family
A spouse and children under 20 can apply for their own DTV as dependants.
Renewing
It lasts five years. You can't work for Thai companies or Thai clients on it, and it doesn't lead to residence.
What it leads to
Nowhere: no residence and no citizenship
Tax
180 days in a calendar year, on foreign income you bring in

Worth knowing

  • 31 August 2026: a criminal record certificate, and citizenship or permanent residence where you apply, became requirements.
  • 15 September 2026: visa-free stays were cut from 60 days to 30.
