Digital nomad visas

Greece digital nomad visa

Greece's digital nomad visa lets you live there for up to a year, then on a two-year permit, while working for employers or clients outside Greece. You need EUR 3,500 a month after tax, and you apply at a Greek consulate before you go.

At a glance

The visa
Digital nomad visa and residence permit
What you need
About $3,930 a month (EUR 3,500 a month); in pounds, about £2,950 a month
What counts as proof
Contracts with employers or clients outside Greece, or bank statements. Add 20 per cent for a spouse and 15 per cent for each child.
Who can apply
Employees of a company abroad: yes. Freelancers: yes. Owners of a company abroad: unclear (the law names employees and freelancers, not company owners. A founder paid as one of those would fit the wording).
How long
A visa of up to a year, then a two-year permit, renewable
Without a visa
British and American visitors: 90 days in any 180 across Schengen
EU, EEA and Swiss citizens
Need no visa: they can live and work there anyway.

The catch. Since February 2026 you must apply at a consulate before you go: applying from inside Greece no longer works.

How to apply

  1. Apply to the Greek consulate for where you live, in person, by email or by post. The law gives consulates 10 days to reply.
  2. You get a national visa valid for up to 12 months.
  3. Before it runs out, apply in Greece for the two-year residence permit, at the immigration office of the regional administration where you live.
  4. Law firms say that since a new law in February 2026 you can no longer apply from inside Greece without the visa first.

Fees and timing

National visa
EUR 75, set in the law.
Residence permit
EUR 1,000 for the main applicant and EUR 150 for each family member, according to law firms.
How long it takes
The consulate must reply within 10 days. Lexidy, a law firm, says the immigration office should examine the permit file within 40 working days, though the card usually comes three to four months after you apply.

The documents

The main items. Your consulate's own checklist is the one that counts, so check it before you start.

  • The standard national visa documents: form, passport, photos and somewhere to stay
  • A signed statement that you won't work for Greek employers or clients
  • Proof of work for an employer outside Greece, freelance contracts with foreign clients, or your own business abroad
  • Proof of EUR 3,500 a month: a contract or bank statements
  • A criminal record certificate, apostilled and translated into Greek or English, according to law firms
  • Health insurance

Health insurance

The law doesn't set a minimum. Advisers disagree on whether travel insurance is enough for the visa. For the permit you need private health insurance valid in Greece, covering the whole stay and your family.

Family, renewing and tax

Family
A spouse or civil partner and children under 18 come on their own visas. Add 20% to the income for a spouse and 15% for each child: EUR 4,200 a month for a couple. They may not work in Greece.
Renewing
The permit lasts two years and can be renewed while you still qualify. PwC says renewing late now brings a EUR 100 fine for each month.
What it leads to
EU long-term residence after five years, if nomad years count, which Greek law does not confirm. Citizenship after seven, holding a long-term permit
Tax
More than 183 days in any 12 months, and then you are resident from your first day

Worth knowing

  • February 2026: Law 5275/2026 ended applications for the permit from inside Greece, according to law firms.

Where this comes from. Immigration authorities, foreign ministries, consulate checklists and the laws themselves, checked on 14 October 2026. Where an official page was silent or wouldn't load, we used law firms and immigration specialists, and say so in the text. The income figures come from our visa checker, which converts them at today's rate.

This isn't legal advice. Rules change and consulates apply them differently. For anything you can't undo, check with the consulate or an immigration lawyer.
