Brazil digital nomad visa (VITEM XIV)
Brazil's digital nomad visa needs USD 1,500 a month from outside Brazil, or USD 18,000 in the bank, one of the lowest bars anywhere. It lasts a year and can be renewed, and you can apply at a consulate or from inside Brazil.
At a glance
- The visa
- Digital nomad visa (VITEM XIV)
- What you need
- $1,500 a month; in pounds, about £1,130 a month
- What counts as proof
- The resolution sets no period. Law firms quote three or six months of bank statements, so ask the consulate.
- Who can apply
- Employees of a company abroad: yes. Freelancers: yes (you need written service contracts with clients abroad). Owners of a company abroad: unclear (the rules need a tie to a foreign employer and do not say whether your own company counts. Consulates may want a contract between you and it).
- How long
- Up to a year, renewable for an equal period; law firms read that as once
- Without a visa
- British visitors: 90 days, extendable through the Policia Federal. American: an eVisa is needed, since 10 April 2025
The catch. If your income falls short, USD 18,000 in the bank qualifies instead. But the visa does not stop you becoming tax resident on day 184, and Brazil then taxes the foreign salary that got you the visa.

How to apply
- At a consulate: apply to the Brazilian consulate for where you live. Since 1 September 2026, according to immigration sites citing a Brazilian embassy notice, nationalities that can visit visa-free, such as British, are due to get the visa electronically, though not every consulate had switched over.
- From inside Brazil: while you're there as a visitor, apply to the Ministry of Justice through its MigranteWeb system, before your stay runs out.
- Within 90 days of arriving, register with the Federal Police for your foreigner ID card, the CRNM.

The documents
The main items. Your consulate's own checklist is the one that counts, so check it before you start.
- Passport and application form
- Health insurance valid in Brazil, for the consulate route
- A criminal record certificate
- A statement that your work can be done remotely
- An employment or service contract with an employer or clients abroad
- Proof of the income or the savings
- Inside Brazil, also proof of your parents' names, translated and legalised, and criminal records for the last five years
Health insurance
Required for the consulate route: cover valid in Brazil. No minimum is set.

Family, renewing and tax
- Family
- The rules have no family provisions, so family members apply for their own visa, usually family reunion. Ask the consulate.
- Renewing
- Renew through the Ministry of Justice for another year, with your documents, your ID card and criminal records for your time there.
- What it leads to
- Nowhere directly: no route to permanent residence, and the years do not count towards citizenship
- Tax
- 184 days within 12 months makes you tax resident on worldwide income
Worth knowing
- September 2026: electronic visas for visa-exempt nationalities, according to immigration sites.
- April 2025: Americans, Canadians and Australians need an eVisa even to visit.
