City vs city

Tirana vs Athens for remote workers

How Tirana and Athens compare on cost, visas, working hours, weather, internet and safety. Every figure comes from our city guides and tools, checked and dated there.

The short answer

  • Tirana Pick it for a lower visa income bar and faster internet.
  • Athens Pick it for a lower US travel advisory level.

What a month costs

Rent, a coworking desk, a cheap lunch on each of 22 working days, and getting around: the same four costs our budget calculator uses. The rent figures aren't always the same kind of figure (some are furnished one-beds, some are averages across every size of flat), so read the note under each.

Tirana

$754 to $1,380£567 to £1,030 a month

Rent
$561 to $1,120Asking rent, one-bed, Dinamo stadium area, from agencies quoted by Balkanweb, June 2026. Furnished or not is not stated. The city-wide average for all flats is EUR 721. EUR 500 to 1,000
A desk
$112 to $146Monthly hot desk at Coolab, near Blloku, from a 2026 travel blog rather than the operator. Dutch Hub is EUR 120 to 150 on the same page. EUR 100 to 130
Weekday lunches
$81 to $108A street gyro and a soft drink, from a May 2026 travel blog's sample Tirana day. A byrek from a bakery is 80 to 150 ALL on the same page, ALL 300 to 400 each, 22 working days

The visas

Tirana

Unique Permit for Digital Mobile Workers

Income needed
About $394 a month (ALL 32,000 a month); in pounds, about £296 a month
How long
One year, renewable (EY, 2026). You apply after arriving, and processing takes about 12 weeks. US, EU and Kosovo citizens are reported to get five years on a first application, which EY does not mention
What it leads to
Permanent residence after a one, two and five-year chain of permits, according to a 2022 law-firm note. Years to citizenship not checked
Without a visa
British passports: 90 days in any 180. American: up to one year without a residence permit

The catch. The official figures could not be opened, EY's 2026 guide gives no income figure, and the 32,000 ALL a month quoted online is about a third of the average Albanian wage, so check the requirement on e-Albania or the Ministry of Interior on the day you apply.

Athens

Digital nomad visa and residence permit

Income needed
About $3,930 a month (EUR 3,500 a month); in pounds, about £2,950 a month
How long
A visa of up to a year, then a two-year permit, renewable
What it leads to
EU long-term residence after five years, if nomad years count, which Greek law does not confirm. Citizenship after seven, holding a long-term permit
Without a visa
British and American passports: 90 days in any 180 across Schengen

The catch. Since February 2026 you must apply at a consulate before you go: applying from inside Greece no longer works.

Who each one suits

From each city guide, word for word.

Tirana

It suits

Americans, who can stay up to a year without any paperwork. People on modest budgets who do not mind a city that runs on cash. Anyone who wants a cheap, low-admin base in Europe that sits outside Schengen, so the days do not count against the 90 in 180 there.

It doesn't suit

Anyone who needs to pay by card everywhere, or wants to drink from the tap. British and European passport holders who want to stay past 90 days without applying for a residence permit. Anyone who thinks Tirana rents are still cheap: agencies put the average at EUR 721 a month, which Balkanweb works out as 97 per cent of the average local net wage, and one-beds by the lake reach EUR 1,500. And anyone uneasy about frequent protests, sometimes violent, and small bombs set off in organised-crime disputes, both of which the US government warns about.

Athens

It suits

Remote workers on a solid foreign salary who want winter sun and a proper city rather than a resort, and who treat spring and autumn as the best months. Daily life is cheap even where rent is not: lunch is a EUR 4 gyros, the transport pass is EUR 27 a month and the Acropolis Museum stays open until 10pm on Fridays. It works best if you arrive on a D visa arranged in advance, and either stay under 183 days or budget for Greek tax.

It doesn't suit

Anyone who needs a bearable summer: July and August heatwaves reach 38 degrees and more, and in July 2025 the Acropolis shut in the afternoons. Anyone who needs fast home broadband guaranteed, or a bureaucracy in English. Remote employees counting on the famous 50 per cent tax break, which does not cover them. And anyone planning to fly in visa-free and sort out a permit later: that door closed in February 2026.
