City guides Albania
Tirana
A Balkan capital outside Schengen, where an American passport is good for up to a year without a permit and a British one for 90 days in 180. It runs mostly on cash and the tap water is not safe to drink. And it is not the bargain older guides promise: agencies put the average rent at EUR 721 a month, close to the average local take-home wage.
Every figure checked 15 Oct 2026
- EUR 500 to 1,000 a month Asking rent, one-bed, Dinamo stadium area

- Time zone UTC+2 07:23 there now
- Language Albanian
- Currency Albanian lek (ALL)
- Plugs Type C and F, 230V
How far English gets you Not checked. We found no source on how far English gets you in Tirana, at the bank, with a landlord or at the permit office, so this guide makes no claim either way. We will add one when we have it.
Honestly
Is this your kind of place?
It suits you if
Americans, who can stay up to a year without any paperwork. People on modest budgets who do not mind a city that runs on cash. Anyone who wants a cheap, low-admin base in Europe that sits outside Schengen, so the days do not count against the 90 in 180 there.
It does not suit you if
Anyone who needs to pay by card everywhere, or wants to drink from the tap. British and European passport holders who want to stay past 90 days without applying for a residence permit. Anyone who thinks Tirana rents are still cheap: agencies put the average at EUR 721 a month, which Balkanweb works out as 97 per cent of the average local net wage, and one-beds by the lake reach EUR 1,500. And anyone uneasy about frequent protests, sometimes violent, and small bombs set off in organised-crime disputes, both of which the US government warns about.

Come now Fine Avoid
On the averages alone, April to June and September to October are the comfortable months. July and August average highs of 32 to 33 degrees, with only about 40mm of rain. Every month from October to March averages over 100mm, and November is the wettest at 151mm. Winter nights average 2 to 4 degrees. These are 1991-2020 averages for Tirana Airport, read from Wikipedia's table rather than Albania's met service. We found no official figures on tourist seasons or price swings, so this says nothing about crowds.
Connectivity
The internet, honestly
Albania's median fixed broadband download was 93.64 Mbps in March 2026, on Ookla's Speedtest Global Index. That is a national figure, not one for Tirana, and we read it from a copy of the index rather than Ookla's own page. We have nothing checked on working from cafes.
If you have calls, a coworking day pass is the cautious choice: Pragmatic Space, n'Zon, Innospace, Coolab and Dutch Hub all sell them.
Work
Remote roles open to someone in Albania
A remote job is not in any one city. These are roles whose employer will hire someone living here, pulled from the board as you load the page.

The rest
Things the other guides leave out
-
Carry cash
The US State Department says Albania is mainly cash-based
-
Do not drink the tap water
The State Department says it is not drinkable
-
A home can make you tax resident
Over 183 days in a calendar year makes you resident, but so does a permanent home in Albania, whatever your days
-
Pay fines at the station
Pay traffic fines at a police station or court, never to an officer. An international driving permit is only valid for one year
-
A used UK or US visa can get others in
Third-country nationals holding a UK or US multiple-entry visa or residence permit can enter visa-free, but only once it has been used in the country that issued it
-
Cash at the border
You can carry up to 1,000,000 ALL in or out
Work out whether you can actually afford to go
Every role on the board says which countries you can live in and still take it, so remote means remote.
