City vs city

Marrakech vs Las Palmas for remote workers

How Marrakech and Las Palmas compare on cost, visas, working hours, weather, internet and safety. Every figure comes from our city guides and tools, checked and dated there.

The short answer

  • Marrakech Doesn't win on any measure here. See who it suits, below.
  • Las Palmas Pick it for more comfortable months and faster internet.
Everyday costsEven
What we have checked of rent, a coworking desk, weekday lunches and getting around comes to $884 to $1,350 (£664 to £1,020) a month in Marrakech, against $1,080 to $1,200 (£810 to £901) in Las Palmas. We can't call it: Marrakech has no checked figure for transport and Las Palmas has no checked figure for a desk, so both totals leave them out.
The visaEven
Morocco has no remote work visa, so the choice is about more than income. Marrakech: no remote work visa. Las Palmas: International telework visa, about $2,740 to $3,200 a month (EUR 2,442 a month, sources differ).

What a month costs

Rent, a coworking desk, a cheap lunch on each of 22 working days, and getting around: the same four costs our budget calculator uses. The rent figures aren't always the same kind of figure (some are furnished one-beds, some are averages across every size of flat), so read the note under each.

The visas

Marrakech

No remote work visa

Without a visa
British passports: up to 90 days for tourism, extendable at a Moroccan police station. American: under 90 days; overstay without an extension and you go before a judge before you can leave

The catch. There is no digital nomad or remote work visa. Longer stays need a residence card (carte d'immatriculation) as a "visiteur" under Law 02-03: one to ten years, renewable, for anyone who can live on their own resources. The law sets no income figure, and you promise not to work in Morocco without authorisation. The 90 days are for tourism. Overstay without a police extension and you must appear before a judge before you are allowed to leave.

Las Palmas

International telework visa

Income needed
About $2,740 to $3,200 a month (EUR 2,442 a month, sources differ); in pounds, about £2,060 to £2,400 a month
How long
Up to a year from a consulate, or three years if you apply inside Spain
What it leads to
Permanent residence after five years, citizenship after ten
Without a visa
British and American passports: 90 days in any 180 across Schengen

The catch. You also need a degree or three years of experience, and at least three months with your employer or clients.

Who each one suits

From each city guide, word for word.

Marrakech

It suits

Someone doing a two or three-month winter or spring stint inside the visa-free window, who wants sun and a clock that matches the UK's in winter and is an hour behind it in summer, for easy UK and EU calls. Best if you speak some French, are happy working from a paid desk, and treat the medina as somewhere to visit rather than live.

It doesn't suit

Anyone wanting a legal long-term remote work status: there isn't one, and a residence card is police-station paperwork with no published income figure. Same-sex relations are a crime, with up to three years in prison. The US government says women travelling alone are particularly vulnerable to harassment and assault. July and August have average highs of 37 to 38 degrees. Alcohol is legal only in licensed venues. In the medina you will be hustled on your way home. If you need things to work in English without negotiation, this is the wrong city.

Las Palmas

It suits

Remote workers on UK or European hours who want mild weather twelve months a year and a city with a life of its own, not a resort strip. It suits anyone who will stay long enough to register on the padron, which brings island-wide buses down to EUR 14 for 90 days, and who is happy working from a flat with fibre near the beach. The visa is Spain's international telework visa, at EUR 2,442 a month gross in 2026.

It doesn't suit

Anyone expecting cheap Spain. Asking rents in Santa Catalina and La Isleta are the highest in the Canaries and rose by up to 21 per cent in a year, and a 2024 check found central listings 50 to 91 per cent above the government's own reference index. The coworking scene is small and mostly price on request. The city often sits under low cloud in summer while the south of the island is in sun. And nothing official happens in English: the padron, the NIE and the bus pass all assume Spanish.
