City vs city

Budapest vs Tbilisi for remote workers

How Budapest and Tbilisi compare on cost, visas, working hours, weather, internet and safety. Every figure comes from our city guides and tools, checked and dated there.

The short answer

  • Budapest Pick it for easier US East Coast hours and faster internet.
  • Tbilisi Doesn't win on any measure here. See who it suits, below.
Everyday costsEven
Close: it depends more on where you live than which city. Rent, a coworking desk, weekday lunches and getting around come to $1,030 to $1,250 (£770 to £940) a month in Budapest, against $716 to $1,780 (£538 to £1,330) in Tbilisi.
The visaEven
Georgia has no remote work visa, so the choice is about more than income. Budapest: White Card, about $3,370 a month (EUR 3,000 a month). Tbilisi: no remote work visa.
A London 9 to 5Even
Normal hours in both: 10:00 to 18:00 in Budapest, 12:00 to 20:00 in Tbilisi.
A New York 9 to 5Budapest

WeatherEven
Comfortable months on our best-time rule: 5 in Budapest, 6 in Tbilisi. Both are comfortable in May, June, July, August and September.
InternetBudapest
Budapest is faster. Typical download speed: 252 Mbps in Budapest, 20 Mbps in Tbilisi, from each guide.
SafetyEven
The US State Department puts both countries at level 1. Watch for inflated bar bills and taxis in Budapest; card skimming and protests in Tbilisi.

What a month costs

Rent, a coworking desk, a cheap lunch on each of 22 working days, and getting around: the same four costs our budget calculator uses. The rent figures aren't always the same kind of figure (some are furnished one-beds, some are averages across every size of flat), so read the note under each.

The visas

Budapest

White Card

Income needed
About $3,370 a month (EUR 3,000 a month); in pounds, about £2,530 a month
How long
One year, renewable once: two years at most
What it leads to
Nowhere: holders may not be granted a national residence card
Without a visa
British and American passports: 90 days in any 180 across Schengen

The catch. Nobody can join you on it, and owning even a share in a Hungarian company gets it withdrawn.

How to apply, the fees and documents

Tbilisi

No remote work visa

Without a visa
British and American passports: one year visa-free, with GEL 30,000 of health insurance

The catch. There is no remote work visa. Since 1 March 2026 working in Georgia, including remotely, needs a work permit, according to the UK government and Georgia's foreign ministry. Whether employees of foreign companies are caught is still unclear, law firms say. The one-year visa-free stay is still there. The right to work on it is what changed.

Who each one suits

From each city guide, word for word.

Budapest

It suits

Employees of a foreign company, or owners of a profitable one, earning EUR 3,000 a month net or more, who want one or two good years in a central European capital. It suits people who like real seasons, cheap and complete public transport and a deep cafe culture, and who are happy renting in Pest's central districts or across the river in Buda.

It doesn't suit

Anyone hoping to settle, because the White Card stops at two years and cannot turn into residence. Couples and families, because your partner cannot join you on it. Freelancers without a company, who have no clear route at all. Anyone who might take a single Hungarian client or buy into a local business, since either gets the card withdrawn. And anyone who hates winter: from November to February the city is grey, with highs of 3 to 9 degrees.

Tbilisi

It suits

Somebody employed by a foreign company who wants a cheap, walkable, characterful city with superb food, and who is relaxed about permit rules that are still being clarified. Rents have eased from their 2023 peak, coworking is cheap and good, and spring and autumn are lovely.

It doesn't suit

Anyone planning to freelance or consult on the 1 per cent regime without a work permit: since March 2026 that is unlawful, and consulting was never eligible anyway. Anyone who needs a guaranteed legal position for a full year, because the rules changed this year and the lawyers still disagree. Anyone who wants citizenship in five years, because the law now says ten. And anyone who wants to stay well clear of politics: there are daily protests a block from the old town, and the FCDO says a foreigner who joins one can be refused re-entry.
