What a month costs
Rent, a coworking desk, a cheap lunch on each of 22 working days, and getting around: the same four costs our budget calculator uses. The rent figures aren't always the same kind of figure (some are furnished one-beds, some are averages across every size of flat), so read the note under each.

The catch. The bar is four times the minimum wage, so it rises every January. And a partner can now join you only once you have held the permit for two years.
The average high in °C each month, coloured by the rule on our best-time page: green is a high of 20 to 32°C with under 150mm of rain; red is a high of 38°C or more or under 12°C, 250mm of rain or more, or 33°C or more with 150mm of rain or more. Hover over a month for its rain.
The US level is for the whole country, as the State Department sets it, and some countries have stricter advice for particular regions.
Who each one suits
From each city guide, word for word.
Porto
It suits
Someone who wants Portuguese residency on the D8 visa but a smaller city than Lisbon, and who earns well over EUR 3,680 a month after tax and social contributions. One EUR 40 Andante pass covers the metro, buses and urban trains across the metro area. It works best from May to September, when highs are 20 to 25 degrees and there are 3 to 9 rain days a month, so you can work outdoors.
It doesn't suit
Anyone who hates rain. Porto Airport averages 1,147mm a year, with 149 to 166mm in each of October, November, December and January, on 11 to 13 days a month. Anyone expecting cheap rent: asking rents are EUR 19 a square metre in the city (idealista, September 2026). And anyone after a quick EU passport: citizenship now takes ten years for UK and US nationals, and a partner can generally join you only after you have held residence for two years.
Remote workers who want a big city with a beach, mild winters and a working coworking scene at around EUR 205 a month plus VAT. It suits people who eat out at lunch, because the menu del dia averages EUR 13. Under-30s do best of all: the EMT Jove pass gives unlimited city buses for EUR 12.50 a month. The visa is Spain's international telework visa, at EUR 2,442 a month gross in 2026.
It doesn't suit
Anyone expecting cheap Spain or easy housing. Asking rents are at records, district averages run from about EUR 1,400 to EUR 2,000 a month across all flat sizes, and in 2024 short lets of 1 to 11 months made up 15 per cent of the rental supply. July and August bring 30 degree days and 21 to 22 degree nights. September and October are the wettest months and the storm season. If you need English at the town hall, a central flat under EUR 1,000 or a cool summer, look elsewhere.
