Madeira (Funchal)

  • Free nomad village desk
  • London time Atlantic island
  • Lower regional income tax

An Atlantic island on the same clock as London all year, with a government-run nomad village that gives you a free desk and a ready-made community. Once resident, you pay income tax at rates up to 30 per cent below the mainland's. The catch is the rent: the median one-bed asking rent in Funchal is EUR 1,400 a month, and the villages nomads want have almost no long lets.

Every figure checked 14 Oct 2026

  • EUR 710 to 1,850 a month, median EUR 1,400 Asking rent, one-bed, Funchal
  • EUR 150 to 160 plus VAT Coworking monthly
  • EUR 8 to 12 Prato do dia
  • Country Portugal
  • Time zone UTC+1 06:27 there now
  • Language Portuguese
  • Currency Euro (EUR)
  • Plugs Type F, 230V. Type C and E plugs fit too

How far English gets you English carries you through Funchal's tourist economy: hotels, restaurants in the Zona Velha and Lido, coworking spaces and car hire. The Ponta do Sol nomad community works in it too. It stops at the state. AIMA residence appointments, the Financas tax office (for your NIF and income tax), the Loja do Cidadao, landlords outside the expat market and SESARAM health centres all work in Portuguese. All laws, including Madeira's own decrees, are published only in Portuguese.

Honestly

Is this your kind of place?

It suits you if

Remote workers who want UK time, a mild island and people to meet without having to find them. The Ponta do Sol Nomad Village gives you a free desk, a Wednesday lunch and a Friday party. In Funchal a coworking desk costs EUR 150 to 160 a month. Non-EU earners clearing EUR 3,680 a month after tax get a D8 that renews, and pay Madeira's lower regional income-tax rates once they are tax resident.

It does not suit you if

Anyone expecting cheap Portugal: Funchal one-bed listings ask up to EUR 1,850 a month, with a median of EUR 1,400. Anyone set on living in Ponta do Sol or Calheta, which have almost no long lets. Anyone who doesn't want a car or steep hills, or who will tire of a small island within a few months. And anyone moving for citizenship: since 19 May 2026 it takes ten years for British and American residents, and since late 2025 a partner usually waits two years to join you.

Where to live

Where to base yourself

  • Sao Martinho (Lido, Ajuda, Estrada Monumental), Funchal

    About EUR 1,365 to 1,725 a month asking for a one-bed

The seafront hotel strip, with the Lido pools, the promenade, Sangha Cowork and half of the one-bed listings

The catch One-bed asks run high here (EUR 16.9 per square metre on idealista, above the Funchal average), and you live in a zone of hotels rather than a neighbourhood

  • Se and Santa Maria Maior (centre and Zona Velha), Funchal

    About EUR 1,100 to 1,400 a month asking for a one-bed

Walk to the Mercado dos Lavradores, Cowork Funchal, the bars of Rua de Santa Maria and the cable car

The catch Se has Funchal's highest asking rent per square metre, and Santa Maria Maior is the nightlife and cruise-passenger zone, so expect noise

  • Canico (Santa Cruz)

    About EUR 1,100 to 1,450 a month asking for a one-bed

Quieter, east of Funchal and close to the airport, and the official median rent is lower than Funchal's

The catch You will want a car: the island-wide bus costs more than Funchal's city buses and is slower

  • Ponta do Sol

    Not checked

Home of the Nomad Village, with the free desk, the weekly community lunch and Purple Friday

The catch Almost no long lets show on the listing sites, and the official rent figures don't even cover it. Expect short lets or nothing

  • Nov 23C, 80mm, 7 rain days
  • Dec 21C, wettest, 95mm

Come now Fine Avoid

There is no bad month for the weather. Highs stay between 20 and 27 degrees all year. April to July and September are the best months, and August is the warmest and busiest: June to August are almost dry, and September still averages 26.6 degrees. October to December is the wet season, with 80 to 95mm a month on 7 to 9 days, and December is the wettest. August is the busiest: in August 2024 Madeira had about 221,300 guests, a record month. The UK government warns of a high wildfire risk across Portugal from April to October. Founder Island Fest, a week for nomads and founders, is listed for 4 to 10 December 2026. The averages are IPMA's 1991-2020 normals for Funchal.

Connectivity

The internet, honestly

That is the national median for a fixed connection in Portugal, from the regulator, for the second quarter of 2026. There is no figure for Madeira itself. The one sourced local point is the Ponta do Sol Nomad Village, which was set up in 2021 with NOS fibre advertised at 500 Mbps down and 300 up.

Funchal's centre cafes are small and turn over quickly, and the cafes in the Lido hotel zone are built for tourists, not laptops. Do email there, but take calls at a desk: EUR 150 to 160 a month in Funchal, or free at Ponta do Sol. Many flats in Funchal's hillside parishes are in older buildings, so ask the landlord to confirm the fibre provider in writing.

The rest

Things the other guides leave out

  • Madeira pays more

Its own minimum wage is EUR 980 in 2026, against EUR 920 on the mainland. Ask the consulate which one your D8 income test uses

  • Lower income tax

Once you are tax resident with a Madeira tax address, income tax rates are up to 30 per cent below the mainland's

  • Haggle on rent

New Funchal leases have a median of EUR 14.49 per square metre (second quarter of 2026), while asking prices average EUR 16.8 (September 2026). The two series measure different things, but treat listing prices as a starting point

  • Citizenship takes ten years

For British and American residents since 19 May 2026, up from five. Your years must fall within a fixed window, so long gaps can set you back

  • The Ponta do Sol desk is free

Register with the form on the Nomad Village page and you also get the Slack workspace and the Wednesday lunch

  • Dengue risk exists

UK travel health advice for Madeira is to avoid mosquito bites during the day
