City guides Bulgaria
Bansko
A small ski town in the Pirin mountains, about two hours by bus from Sofia, with an established coworking space and a nomad festival booked for June 2027. A Coworking Bansko month is EUR 159, an adult lift pass was EUR 33.23 a day last winter, and Bulgaria's nomad permit asks for EUR 27,533 or EUR 31,010 a year, depending on which year's minimum wage is applied; law firms disagree, so plan on the higher figure. The catch: it is a resort, not a city, and much of the everyday cost of living here rests on weak sources.
Every figure checked 15 Oct 2026
- EUR 300 to 750 a month Furnished one-bed
- EUR 159 Coworking Bansko, monthly
- About EUR 6 to 10 Cheap lunch
- Country Bulgaria
- Time zone UTC+3 08:22 there now
- Language Bulgarian, written in Cyrillic
- Currency Euro (EUR)
- Plugs Type C and F, 230V
How far English gets you Not checked: we found no source on how widely English is spoken in Bansko. Two sourced points: the mountain rescue service publishes its ski-slope safety rules in Bulgarian only, and the US government tells callers to 112 to ask for an English-speaking operator, so do not assume one by default.
Honestly
Is this your kind of place?
It suits you if
Remote workers who want a ready-made coworking community, cheap skiing and mountains on the doorstep. A EUR 159 coworking month and a season pass that was EUR 869.20 if bought early make a winter of working and skiing affordable. For a permit, it suits people earning at least EUR 31,010 a year (the safer reading) from an employer or clients outside the EU, EEA and Switzerland, ideally in IT work.
It does not suit you if
Anyone who needs a city: Bansko is a mountain resort town, and Sofia is about two hours away by bus. Anyone who doesn't ski, since winter is when stays cost more and the town revolves around the lifts. Anyone with an EU employer or Bulgarian clients, who the nomad permit shuts out. And anyone who wants hard numbers before moving: rents here are single listings, food prices come from a blog and a crowdsourced site, and there is no local internet speed.
Money
What everything else costs
| Coworking Bansko, day pass | EUR 19 | The operator's "Coworking+" pass. The festival guide puts day passes in town at around EUR 15 to 16 |
|---|---|---|
| Coliving | From about EUR 650 a month | The festival guide, July 2026 |
| Home internet | EUR 10 to 30 a month | The festival guide, July 2026 |
| Bus from Sofia | About EUR 13 to 17 one way | EUR 13 in the festival guide, EUR 17 from Sofia central bus station in a travel blog. Booking sites quote other fares; about two to three hours |
| Private transfer from Sofia | From about EUR 90 a vehicle | The festival guide, July 2026 |
| Adult ski day pass | EUR 33.23 | 2025/26 season. 2026/27 prices not yet published when we checked |

Paperwork
Can you legally stay?
| Evidence | Bank statements, employment contracts or invoices, plus health insurance, a clean criminal record and proof of accommodation, such as a declaration from your landlord |
|---|---|
| The threshold moves | It is pinned to the minimum wage, so it rises every time the minimum wage does. That is why there are two figures: EUR 27,533 uses the 2025 minimum wage and EUR 31,010 the 2026 one |
| Official name | Digital nomad residence permit, under the Foreigners in the Republic of Bulgaria Act, in force since 30 June 2025. You enter on a Type D visa. Applications accepted from December 2025, according to a law firm |
| Who qualifies | Employees of a company registered outside the EU, EEA and Switzerland; freelancers who have provided remote IT services for at least a year, with no Bulgarian clients; and directors or owners of more than 25 per cent of a company outside the EU, EEA and Switzerland. All three involve remote IT services, and whether other work counts is unclear. Employees of EU companies appear to be excluded |
| How long | One year. It can be extended, but sources differ on how far: two law firms say by one more year only |
| Permanent residence | No, says one law firm: the permit does not lead to permanent residence, and time on it does not count. Not confirmed on an official page |
| Citizenship | Not checked |
| Without a visa | British passports: 90 days in any 180 across Schengen (GOV.UK). American passports: 90 days or less, with a passport valid for three months beyond the day you leave Schengen |
| Tax residency | More than 183 days in any 12-month period, or if your centre of vital interests (personal and economic ties) is in Bulgaria |

Pick by what you want. For skiing, the lifts ran from 13 December 2025 to 12 April 2026, with daytime highs of about 3 to 10 degrees from January to March. For working in the mountains, May to September has highs of about 21 to 27 degrees, and Nomad Fest runs from 20 to 27 June 2027. November is between seasons. The temperatures are from an amateur station network for 2000 to 2014; an older 1931 to 1970 table puts the wettest months in November and December, at about 80mm, and the driest in August, at 31mm.
Connectivity
The internet, honestly
That is the median fixed download for Bulgaria as a whole, 94.44 Mbps, from Ookla data for March 2026. There is no figure for Bansko.
Home internet costs about EUR 10 to 30 a month, according to the Nomad Fest guide. We found nothing on cafe wifi. For a day of calls, a coworking desk is the safer bet.
