City guides Brazil

Rio de Janeiro

  • Mountains meet the ocean
  • Carnival on your doorstep
  • Big city by the beach

A big, loud city between the mountains and the Atlantic, with a nomad visa that asks USD 1,500 a month. It is not cheap Brazil: furnished one-beds in Copacabana and Ipanema were asking BRL 2,800 to 8,000 a month in October 2026, before condo fees. And it is not easy: the UK government tells you to stay off city beaches after dark, and phone theft peaks between 4pm and 9pm. Come for May to August, work from a desk, and keep your phone in your pocket.

Every figure checked 15 Oct 2026

  • BRL 2,800 to 7,000 a month Asking rent, furnished one-bed, Copacabana
  • BRL 5.00 a ride Bus, BRT, VLT and vans
  • BRL 31.99 Prato feito
  • Country Brazil
  • Time zone UTC-3 04:15 there now
  • Language Portuguese
  • Currency Brazilian real (BRL, written R$)

How far English gets you Patchy, and it stops early. Expect English at international hotels, at the WeWork and Spaces coworking sites and with some restaurant staff in the Zona Sul. It stops at almost everything you deal with day to day: landlords and building porters, pharmacies, buses, government offices and the Policia Federal, where you do your residence paperwork. Systems also assume a Brazilian tax number (CPF): Carnival's half-price tickets are limited to one per CPF.

Honestly

Is this your kind of place?

It suits you if

People who want a big, beautiful city with the sea at the end of the street, and who will work from a coworking desk rather than a beach cafe. You should earn well above the USD 1,500 a month the nomad visa asks, because Zona Sul rents are not low. It suits someone who will learn Portuguese, live with street-smart habits and plan the year around the dry, 25-degree months of May to August. Britons can try it first on a 90-day visa-free stay.

It does not suit you if

Anyone who wants to walk around with a phone in hand, take a laptop to the beach or stroll the sand at night: the UK government says not to go on city beaches after dark, and both the UK and the US warn of phone theft, drink spiking and express kidnapping. Anyone on a tight budget, because condo fees alone run up to BRL 2,948 a month in Ipanema. Americans who have not got a visa before they fly. Anyone who wilts in heat, since December to February bring highs of 30 to 31 degrees, and GOV.UK says flash floods are common. Anyone who needs life to work in English. And anyone who plans to spend more than half the year there without being taxed on worldwide income. On day 184, Brazil will.

Can you legally stay?

Minimum income USD 1,500 a month from a source outside Brazil, or USD 18,000 in the bank instead
Official name Visto Temporario para Nomade Digital (VITEM XIV), under CNIg Resolution 45 of 2021
The threshold does not move It is a fixed dollar sum written into the resolution, not pinned to the minimum wage. Only a new CNIg resolution changes it

Where to apply At a Brazilian consulate abroad, or as a residence permit (autorizacao de residencia) if you are already in Brazil
How long Up to one year, renewable for an equal period. The resolution does not say how many times; law firms read it as once
Where it leads Nowhere directly. There is no route to permanent residence; you must switch category, for example through marriage, investment or work
Citizenship Four years on indefinite-term residence, or one year with a Brazilian spouse or child. Nomad visa years do not count

Where to live

Where to base yourself

  • Copacabana

About BRL 2,800 to 7,000 a month asking for a furnished one-bed, plus condo fees of BRL 670 to 2,100

The most one-bed stock in the Zona Sul (243 listings), the metro along its length and the beach at the end of the street

The catch The beach is where arrastoes happen, gangs sweeping the sand to grab belongings, and the UK government says not to go on city beaches after dark. Phones are targeted, especially from 4pm to 9pm

  • Ipanema

About BRL 5,300 to 8,000 a month asking for a furnished one-bed, with condo fees up to BRL 2,948

A better beach and better food, with a metro stop at Nossa Senhora da Paz

The catch Very little stock, 38 one-bed listings, and the condo fee alone can match a cheap rent elsewhere. The same beach-after-dark rule applies

  • Laranjeiras

One furnished one-bed seen at BRL 4,500 a month (BRL 6,264 with fees); studios BRL 1,900 to 2,500

Residential, leafy and quieter, and still in the central Zona Sul

The catch No beach, and furnished one-beds are rare: most "one-bed" results were really two or three beds

  • Botafogo

    Rent not checked

Where the coworking is: three Spaces sites

The catch Its bay beach is for the view, not for swimming, so you go to Copacabana for the sea

Timing

The best time to come

  • Jan 31C, wettest, 236mm
  • Feb 31C, Carnival 7-9 Feb 2027
  • Mar 29C, still 175mm
  • Apr 28C, rain halves, 92mm
  • May 25C, dry, 63mm
  • Jun 25C, 38mm
  • Jul 25C, 37mm, 15C nights
  • Aug 26C, driest, 35mm
  • Sep 27C, rain returns, 68mm
  • Oct 28C, 105mm, election 25 Oct 2026
  • Nov 28C, wet again, 172mm
  • Dec 30C, 199mm, summer heat

Come now Fine Avoid

Come from April to August. By Climatempo's city averages May to August have highs of 25 to 26 degrees and under 65mm of rain a month, and July nights drop to about 15. December to March is summer: highs of 29 to 31 degrees and 169 to 236mm of rain a month, and the UK government says flash floods and landslides are common where the mountains meet the coast, as in Rio. Carnival's samba school parades are on 7, 8 and 9 February 2027, with the Champions' Parade on 13 February.

Our best-time page uses INMET's Alto da Boa Vista station, 1981 to 2010. It is a forest station 300 m up in the Tijuca hills, and far wetter than the beaches: 182mm in July there, against 37mm in the city figure. By the city figures, the beaches are drier than that station from February to December, January aside.

222 Mbps Typical download

Connectivity

The internet, honestly

That is Brazil-wide fixed broadband, 221.53 Mbps download, from Ookla data for March 2026 as reported via the Ministry of Communications. It is not clear whether it is a median or a mean, and there is no checked figure for Rio itself.

The bigger issue is theft, not speed. The UK government says phones are a prime target, especially from 4pm to 9pm, so a laptop on an open cafe terrace is a worse idea here than in most cities. For calls, use a desk: Spaces in Botafogo sells day passes at BRL 189, and WeWork memberships start at about BRL 1,003 a month.

The rest

Things the other guides leave out

  • Keep your phone out of sight

The UK government says phones are targeted, particularly between 4pm and 9pm, and warns of robbery on buses

  • Vapes are illegal

Including refills, parts and accessories. Leave them at home

  • Watch your drink

The US warns of drugged drinks and robbery through dating apps, especially in Rio. The UK warns alcoholic drinks can contain methanol, which you cannot taste or smell

  • Two stamps, one month

Brazil stamps passports on entry and exit, so keep a blank page for each, and your passport must be valid for at least a month on arrival

  • Resident prices are real money

The Pao de Acucar cable car is BRL 85 for residents against BRL 199. Ask whether your residence card counts

  • Day 184 makes you tax resident

Your 184th day in Brazil within 12 months makes you resident on worldwide income, nomad visa or not
