City guides Colombia

Bogota

  • Free museums in a real capital
  • Rent plus administracion
  • UTC-5 with no clock changes

Colombia's capital, on UTC-5 with no clock changes, where a TransMilenio ride is COP 3,550 and the Museo Botero is free. The catches are in the small print. The rent you see is rarely the rent you pay, because administracion is added on top. The US rates Colombia Level 3. And the nomad visa is a permit of up to two years that leads nowhere.

Every figure checked 15 Oct 2026

  • COP 1,900,000 to 4,500,000 a month Asking rent, furnished studio or one-bed, Chapinero Alto
  • COP 3,550 TransMilenio ride
  • COP 17,542 Corrientazo
  • Country Colombia
  • Time zone UTC-5 02:15 there now
  • Language Spanish
  • Currency Colombian peso (COP)
  • Plugs Type A and B, 110V

How far English gets you Better than the country average, but not by much. Colombia scores 480 on the EF English index 2025, 76th in the world; Bogota itself scores 513. It stops at every official counter. The pico y placa exemption platform is Spanish only, the tourist police complaints route is in Spanish, and the visa and cedula steps run through Cancilleria and Migracion Colombia. We found no source on where English does work in the city, so plan on Spanish for anything that matters.

Honestly

Is this your kind of place?

It suits you if

Someone who wants a big capital rather than a nomad enclave, and who will live on TransMilenio at COP 3,550 a ride. US-facing workers, who get UTC-5 with no clock changes. Someone who is happy for the weekend to be free museums: the Museo Botero every day, the Museo del Oro on Sundays. And someone with Spanish, or about to learn it: Bogota's English score of 513 beats Colombia's 480, but Spanish still does the work at every counter that matters.

It does not suit you if

Anyone wanting a warm-weather nomad city. Anyone who needs everything in English: the tourist police complaints route, the cedula, the car-restriction platform and the lease all run in Spanish. Anyone who takes a listed rent as the rent, because administracion often adds COP 400,000 to 600,000 a month. Anyone careless about safety: the US rates Colombia Level 3, "Reconsider travel", the US Embassy has warned that foreigners are drugged and robbed through dating apps in Bogota, and the British government warns of fake police who ask to check your cash. And anyone hoping the nomad visa leads somewhere: it does not count towards residence, and its income bar resets every January.

Where to live

Where to base yourself

  • Chapinero Alto

About COP 1,900,000 to 4,500,000 a month asking, furnished

The biggest pool of studios and one-beds in the listings we read, with Regus Chapinero nearby

The catch The headline rent is not the cost: most listings add administracion of COP 160,000 to 616,000 a month on top

  • Usaquen, Santa Barbara and Chico Norte

About COP 2,000,000 to 3,600,000 a month asking, furnished

Settled residential streets in the north, with nearly 300 studio listings for the area

The catch You pay for the postcode, not the space: one 17 square metre furnished studio in Chico Norte asks COP 3,600,000 plus COP 500,000 administracion

  • La Candelaria

    Rent not checked

The historic centre, a walk from the Museo Botero (free) and the Museo del Oro (free on Sundays)

The catch No official source names it, but the British government warns of fake police in Bogota who ask to inspect your money, and of armed robbery in major cities including Bogota

Come now Fine Avoid

We could not open Bogota's monthly averages, so this page gives no temperatures or rainfall totals. The ratings rest on the rainy seasons alone. IDEAM, the national met service, says the first runs from mid-March to mid-June in the Andean region, and the second from mid-September; when it ends was not confirmed. That leaves January to early March and late June to early September as the drier windows. The British government warns of floods and landslides after heavy rain in the Colombian Andes, and of a high risk of earthquakes across Colombia. Festival Estereo Picnic runs from 19 to 21 March 2027 at Parque Simon Bolivar. Rock al Parque, which is free, ran from 10 to 12 October in 2026.

Connectivity

The internet, honestly

Treat that number with care. It is Bogota's "average speed" in the Speedtest Global Index for April 2025, from a news report that does not say whether it is fixed or mobile, or a median or a mean. We found no better figure.

We found no source that tests cafe connections in Bogota either, so we will not tell you a cafe will do. The checkable fallback is a desk: Regus charges from COP 9,375 an hour or COP 75,000 a day. For daily calls, get the flat's connection confirmed in writing before you sign.

Eating

What to eat, and what it costs

  • Corrientazo

    COP 17,542

The fixed weekday lunch of soup, a main and a juice. That is the national average for January 2026, up about 10.7 per cent in a year; we found no Bogota price

Days off

Worth a Saturday

  • Monserrate

COP 21,000 on Sundays and holidays, funicular or cable car

The city's viewpoint above the centre. The weekday fare, and whether that is one way or return, were not checked. The footpath is free but has set hours and closes when full

  • Museo del Oro

Free on Sundays. Paid price not checked

Open Tuesday to Sunday at Carrera 6 No. 15-88. Always free for under-12s and over-60s

  • Museo Botero

    Free

At Calle 11 No. 4-41 in La Candelaria. Closed on Tuesdays

  • Museo Nacional

Free on Wednesdays from 3pm to 5pm and on the last Sunday of the month. Other prices not checked

At Carrera 7 No. 28-66, open Tuesday to Sunday

  • Catedral de Sal, Zipaquira

COP 110,000 for foreign adults, from a 2024 price list

An underground cathedral cut into a salt mine, a day trip from the city. Colombians paid COP 66,000 for the same basic ticket, which includes an audioguide and several museums. Prices have likely moved

The rest

Things the other guides leave out

  • Administracion comes on top

Most Bogota listings add the building charge separately, often COP 400,000 to 600,000 a month. Ask for the total before you view

  • Cash deposits are banned

Ley 820 de 2003, article 16, bars cash deposits on urban leases, though landlords are reported to ask anyway

  • The pass is not unlimited

The TransMiPass is COP 160,000 for 65 trips, at most 6 a day, on its own card. Free 125-minute transfers need a personalised TuLlave card

  • You have fifteen days

Visa holders must apply for a Cedula de Extranjeria within 15 days. It costs COP 294,000

  • Pico y placa limits cars

Private cars are restricted by plate on weekdays from 6am to 9pm: plates ending 1 to 5 on odd dates, 6 to 0 on even dates. The paid exemption is sold only on the Secretaria de Movilidad platform, in Spanish

  • Mind the hillsides

The US warns of landslide risk in informal settlements in mountain cities such as Bogota. Check where a flat is before you sign
