City guides Taiwan
Taipei
Extremely low crime, home fibre at a median of about 270 Mbps and a NT$1,200 pass that covers the metro and buses across the region. The nomad visa wants USD 40,000 a year (USD 20,000 if you are under 30) plus USD 10,000 in the bank, and it stops at two years. The catch is the bill and the summer: studios in the districts you would choose have a median of NT$18,000 to 19,500 a month, and July averages a 35 degree high.
Every figure checked 15 Oct 2026
- NT$18,000 a month median Studio rent, Da'an
- NT$1,200 for 30 days TPASS commuter pass
- NT$80 to 100 Biandang (lunch box)
- Country Taiwan
- Time zone UTC+8 14:25 there now
- Language Mandarin. Taiwan has no legally designated official language: Mandarin, Taiwanese Hokkien, Hakka and Indigenous languages are all national languages
- Currency New Taiwan dollar (TWD, written NT$)
- Plugs Type A and B, 110V. Type A is more common
How far English gets you The government publishes the visa, tax-residence and immigration rules in English, and the Taipei Fun Pass ticketing is in English too. It stops where daily life starts: every usable rent figure and street-food price we found was in Chinese-language press, and one coworking operator's full Taipei price list is only on its Chinese page. How much spoken English you will meet day to day we could not check.
Honestly
Is this your kind of place?
It suits you if
A remote employee or freelancer earning USD 40,000 or more (USD 20,000 if under 30) who has USD 10,000 sitting in the bank and wants up to two years somewhere with very low crime. The UK government calls crime "extremely low". Home fibre has a median of about 270 Mbps, and a NT$1,200 pass covers metro and buses across Taipei, New Taipei and Taoyuan. British passport holders in particular can try it for up to 180 days with no visa at all.
It does not suit you if
Anyone who wilts in heat: July averages a 35 degree daily high, and typhoons are possible from May to November. Anyone who vapes: e-cigarettes are banned. Anyone hoping the nomad visa leads somewhere: it is a visitor visa capped at two years, and the government itself says longer stays need a change in the law. Permanent residence runs through the Gold Card instead. And anyone wanting a cheap Asian base: a studio in the districts you would choose has a median of NT$18,000 to 19,500 a month, and the average in Xinyi is over NT$31,000.

Paperwork
Can you legally stay?
| Savings as well | A bank balance averaging at least USD 10,000 a month over the last six months |
|---|---|
| Or instead of the income | A digital nomad visa already issued by another country |
| Evidence | A tax certificate (such as a UK P60 or US W-2) or an employer's salary certificate for one of the last two years, and six months of bank statements. Also a CV or portfolio, a work contract or current freelance contracts, health and hospital insurance for the whole stay and a Description of Intended Activities form. There may be an interview |
| The threshold moves | Fixed US dollar sums. Nothing official says whether they are indexed |
| Official name | Digital Nomad Visitor Visa, launched in January 2025. Only for nationals of visa-exempt countries, aged 20 or over |
| Who qualifies | Employees with a contract with their employer, and freelancers with current contracts. Company owners are not mentioned. Whether you may work for clients in Taiwan was not checked |
| How long | Six months, then extensions of six months at a time, up to two years in all. The government says a longer stay is not possible until the law is amended |
| Fee | Price not checked. It is non-refundable |
| Permanent residence | Not from this visa. The route is the Employment Gold Card: permanent residence after three years, averaging more than 183 days a year in Taiwan. Since 1 January 2026, "global elite" professionals can apply after one year, down from three |
| Citizenship | Not checked |
| Without a visa | British passports (British Citizen status only): 90 days, extendable to 180. American passports: 90 days, not extendable |
| Tax residency | 183 days or more in a calendar year, or a domicile in Taiwan where you habitually live |

Where to base yourself
-
Da'an
About NT$18,000 a month median for a studioThe central, walkable residential core of the city
The catch Its median studio costs NT$3,000 more than the citywide NT$15,000, so you pay a premium for the address
-
Xinyi
About NT$18,000 a month median for a studio; NT$31,016 average in the 2025 registration dataTaipei 101, the main office and mall district, and IWG coworking on Xinyi Road
The catch It has the highest average studio rent in the city in the price-registration data, so the well-located flats cost far more than the median suggests
-
Songshan
About NT$19,000 a month median for a studioFlat, central-east and residential
The catch The second-dearest district for studios in the first half of 2026
-
Neihu
About NT$19,500 a month median for a studioTaipei's tech-park district, if you want to be near tech companies
The catch The highest studio median in the city, though it is away from the old centre, so it is poor value for a remote worker with no office there

Come now Fine Avoid
March, April, November and December are the months, with highs of 21 to 27 degrees and around 90 to 110mm of rain. From June to September highs run from 31.6 to 35 degrees and rain from 214 to 237mm a month. The UK government says typhoon season runs from May to November, with landslides and blocked roads afterwards; typhoons are most likely from July to October. Winter is mild, with highs around 20 degrees. We could not find an official source for the busiest tourist months or hotel price swings. The averages are Central Weather Bureau 1991-2020 normals for Taipei, read from Wikipedia's table.
Connectivity
The internet, honestly
That is Taiwan's median fixed download in Ookla's index for March 2026, read via Wikipedia. Mobile is 117 Mbps. There is no figure for Taipei alone.
Cafe wifi, laptop rules and time limits we could not check, so don't count on a cafe for a full workday. For guaranteed all-day seating, the cheapest published desk is an IWG day pass at NT$680, about 19 convenience-store Americanos at NT$35. For occasional days, cafes win on cost. The weekly nomad co-work in Zhongzheng asks only that you buy one drink or something to eat.

The rest
Things the other guides leave out
-
180 days for Brits
British Citizen passports get 90 days visa-free and can extend to 180. American passports cannot extend
-
Arrival card first
File the online arrival card within 7 days before you land. The US government says it has been required since 1 October 2025
-
Savings as well as salary
The nomad visa wants a bank balance averaging USD 10,000 a month over the last six months, on top of the income bar
-
Vapes are banned
E-cigarettes and heated tobacco are illegal, and you may not bring them in. In June 2026 the Cabinet backed a NT$100,000 fine for possession; that was still a draft
-
Pay the doctor upfront
Medical care usually has to be paid upfront, and US insurance is often not accepted
-
Carry ID
The UK government says to carry your passport. Police usually accept a printed copy of the photo page
Work out whether you can actually afford to go
Every role on the board says which countries you can live in and still take it, so remote means remote.
