City guides Brazil
Florianopolis
An island capital with surf beaches, the best measured English in Brazil and a nomad visa that asks for USD 1,500 a month. It is not cheap Brazil: in 2024 it had the dearest lunch of any state capital, and asking rents rose almost 8 per cent in the year to February 2026. The visa is a stay, not a start. It runs one year plus one renewal, and none of that time counts towards citizenship.

How far English gets you The best measured in Brazil, which is not the same as widely spoken. On the EF English Proficiency Index, Florianopolis scores 577, against 534 for Santa Catarina and 482 for Brazil, which ranks 75th in the world. English works in tech and startup circles, coworking spaces and some restaurants in Lagoa and Jurere. It stops at the Policia Federal, where you register as a foreign resident, at the Receita Federal for your CPF tax number, with landlords and letting agents, on bus information, and in most bakeries and pay-by-weight restaurants.
Honestly
Is this your kind of place?
It suits you if
People who surf, hike or swim and want an outdoor island life, and who earn comfortably above the USD 1,500 a month the nomad visa asks. It suits anyone who will learn some Portuguese, come in March and April or October and November, and work from a coworking desk rather than a cafe. Britons can try it first on a 90-day visa-free stay.
It does not suit you if
Anyone who wants Latin American prices: a full lunch costs BRL 66.40 against a national average of BRL 52.75, and the staple-food basket is the 4th dearest of 27 state capitals. Anyone without a car or a lot of patience, because the island is long and in summer every beach road jams. Anyone who wants to stay for good, since nomad years do not count towards citizenship. Anyone who wants winter sun: June to August averages about 16 to 17 degrees and the sea is cold. And anyone who plans to spend more than half the year there without being taxed on worldwide income. On day 184, Brazil will.

Paperwork
Can you legally stay?
| Official name | Visto Temporario para Nomade Digital (VITEM XIV), under CNIg Resolution 45 of 2021 |
|---|---|
| The threshold does not move | It is a fixed dollar sum written into the resolution, not pinned to the minimum wage. Only a new CNIg resolution changes it |
| Evidence | A declaration that you can work remotely, a contract with your employer or clients abroad, and proof of means. The resolution sets no period; law firms quote three or six months of statements |
| Who qualifies | Employees of a foreign company, and freelancers with written contracts with clients abroad. Owners of their own foreign company are unclear. Working for a Brazilian employer is excluded |
| Where to apply | At a Brazilian consulate abroad, or as a residence permit (autorizacao de residencia) if you are already in Brazil |
| How long | Up to one year, renewable for an equal period. The resolution does not say how many times; law firms read it as once |
| Where it leads | Nowhere directly. There is no route to permanent residence; you must switch category, for example through marriage, investment or work |
| Citizenship | Four years on indefinite-term residence, or one year with a Brazilian spouse or child. Nomad visa years do not count |
| Without a visa | British passports: 90 days for tourism, extendable through the Policia Federal. American passports: an eVisa has been required since 10 April 2025 |
| Tax residency | The day you complete 184 days in Brazil, in one go or not, within 12 months. Then Brazil taxes your worldwide income |

Hotels in Greater Florianopolis expected to be completely full at New Year, so book the second half of December early or avoid it. Winter, from June to August, averages about 16 to 17 degrees: cheap and quiet, but no beach weather.
Connectivity
The internet, honestly
That is the median fixed download for Brazil as a whole, from Ookla data for May 2026 as reported by ISPreview, with 124 Mbps up. There is no checked figure for Florianopolis itself.
For calls, use a desk. Cafes here are padaria-style and built for quick turnover, not a day of laptop work. Coworking spaces sit in Campeche, Lagoa, Centro and along the SC-401 in Saco Grande, where Regus / Spaces sells day passes from BRL 85.
