Digital nomad visas

Croatia digital nomad visa

Croatia lets digital nomads stay for up to 18 months while working for a company outside Croatia, or their own. You need EUR 3,622.50 a month in 2026, or savings instead, and you can apply online.

At a glance

The visa
Temporary stay of digital nomads
What you need
About $4,060 a month (EUR 3,623 a month); in pounds, about £3,050 a month
What counts as proof
Any one of: a bank statement with the total for the whole stay, a bank statement showing regular income at the monthly amount, or six months of payslips. Instead of income you can show EUR 43,470 in the bank for 12 months, or EUR 65,205 for 18. Each family member or partner adds 10 per cent of the average monthly net salary.
Who can apply
Employees of a company abroad: yes. Freelancers: unclear (the rules cover work for a company, or your own company, not registered in Croatia. Freelancers without a company are not mentioned). Owners of a company abroad: yes (the company must not be registered in Croatia, and you must prove you work through it).
How long
Up to 18 months, with one extension of up to 6 months if you were given less. Then a 6-month wait before applying again
Without a visa
British and American visitors: 90 days in any 180 across Schengen
EU, EEA and Swiss citizens
Need no visa: they can live and work there anyway.

The catch. You cannot chain permits: after one ends you wait six months. A lease of 183 days or more can make you tax resident, and your passive income is not exempt. No work for Croatian employers.

How to apply

  1. Apply online on the interior ministry's digital nomad portal. It goes to the police for the address where you'll live.
  2. If you can visit visa-free (as Americans, Britons and Singaporeans can), you can also apply at a Croatian embassy or at a police station while you're in Croatia. If you need a visa, as Indian passport holders do, apply at an embassy and get a long-stay D visa.
  3. Within three days of arriving, register your address with the police.
  4. Collect your biometric residence card in person at a police station.

Fees and timing

At an embassy
EUR 55.74, plus EUR 93 for a D visa if you need one, and EUR 41.14 for the card.
At a police station
EUR 46.45, plus EUR 9.29 and EUR 31.85 for the card.
How long it takes
The ministry doesn't publish one.

The documents

The main items. Your consulate's own checklist is the one that counts, so check it before you start.

  • The online application, or Form 1a
  • Passport valid three months beyond the stay
  • Health insurance
  • A statement and contract with the employer abroad, or your own non-Croatian company's registration and proof you work through it
  • Proof of income or savings
  • A criminal record certificate from your home country, or anywhere you lived for over a year, apostilled
  • A Croatian address, or a hotel or hostel booking
  • Documents in Croatian or English, or with an authorised translation

Health insurance

Travel or private health insurance covering Croatia for the whole stay. No minimum is set.

Family, renewing and tax

Family
Close family can join through family reunification once your own permit is granted, and unmarried partners after three years together. Each person adds 10% of the average net salary to the income needed.
Renewing
One extension, up to 18 months in all, applied for at the police station at least 60 days before it ends. Then you must wait six months before applying again.
What it leads to
Nowhere on its own: the cap and the gap break the five unbroken years permanent residence needs. Citizenship takes eight years plus permanent stay
Tax
At least 183 days in one or two calendar years, or a home at your disposal for 183 days. Foreign-paid work income is exempt on the permit

Worth knowing

  • 2026: the income bar rose to EUR 3,622.50, from EUR 3,295. It is recalculated each year.

Where this comes from. Immigration authorities, foreign ministries, consulate checklists and the laws themselves, checked on 14 October 2026. Where an official page was silent or wouldn't load, we used law firms and immigration specialists, and say so in the text. The income figures come from our visa checker, which converts them at today's rate.

This isn't legal advice. Rules change and consulates apply them differently. For anything you can't undo, check with the consulate or an immigration lawyer.
