City guides Bulgaria

Sofia

  • Euro capital at US Level 1
  • EUR 25.50 a month for transport
  • Nomad permit at EUR 31k a year

An EU capital that now prices in euros, with a US Level 1 safety rating, EUR 25.50 a month for every daytime bus, tram and metro line, and median fixed broadband of about 94 Mbps nationally. Bulgaria's digital nomad permit has been in law from 30 June 2025, with applications accepted since 22 December 2025 (law firm). The bar is EUR 31,010 a year in 2026. The catch is the route in: a D visa from a consulate at home first, an employer or clients outside the EU, and no confirmed path beyond a year or two.

Every figure checked 15 Oct 2026

  • EUR 600 to 750 a month One-bed rent, city centre
  • EUR 25.50 Monthly transport card, personalised
  • EUR 7 to 10 Cheap weekday lunch
  • Country Bulgaria
  • Time zone UTC+3 07:20 there now
  • Currency Euro (EUR)
  • Plugs Type C and F, 230V

How far English gets you Not checked: we found no source on how widely English is spoken. One firm point: the US State Department says that when you dial 112 for police or an ambulance you can ask for an English-speaking operator. Do not assume English at a landlord's, a bank or a government counter.

Honestly

Is this your kind of place?

It suits you if

Remote employees, freelancers and company owners earning more than EUR 31,010 a year (the safer of the two readings), from a company or clients outside the EU, EEA and Switzerland, who want a legal year in an EU capital that uses the euro. It suits someone happy on public transport: a personalised card covering all daytime lines is EUR 25.50 a month. The US rates Bulgaria Level 1, exercise normal precautions.

It does not suit you if

Anyone with Bulgarian clients, or an employer in the EU: the nomad permit is closed to you. Anyone who earned under the bar last calendar year, and the bar rises with every minimum-wage increase. Anyone who wants a quick start: you apply for a D visa from home first, which takes one to two months, then wait two to four weeks in Bulgaria. Anyone counting on settling: nothing confirms the permit leads to permanent residence, and two law firms say it extends by one year only. And anyone for whom CBD or cannabis is routine: both are illegal and penalties are severe.

Money

What everything else costs

Monthly metro-only card EUR 17.50 personalised EUR 21.00 if not personalised
Annual transport card, all lines EUR 185 personalised EUR 305 if not personalised
Single ticket EUR 0.80 From a news headline, not the operator
Coworking hot desk Price not checked betahaus on Slaveykov Square gives day passes on request. A listing site quotes private offices from EUR 250 a month
Coffee EUR 1.50 to 2.00 At a regular cafe. A specialty cappuccino is EUR 2.50 to 3.00

Paperwork

Can you legally stay?

Minimum income EUR 27,533 or EUR 31,010 a year, depending on which year's minimum wage the Migration Directorate applies: 50 times the 2025 minimum wage, or the 2026 one of EUR 620.20. Law firms disagree, so plan on the higher figure
The threshold moves It is pinned to the minimum wage, so it rises every time that does. In 2025 it was about EUR 27,550
Evidence Your income for the previous calendar year, from bank statements, employment contracts or invoices. Also health insurance, a clean criminal record and proof of where you will live, such as a landlord's declaration
Official name Digital nomad residence permit, in law from 30 June 2025, with applications accepted since 22 December 2025 (law firm), under amendments to the Foreigners in the Republic of Bulgaria Act
Who qualifies Employees of a company registered outside the EU, EEA and Switzerland. Freelancers who have personally provided remote IT services for at least a year, with no Bulgarian clients. Directors, board members or owners of more than 25 per cent of a company outside the EU, EEA and Switzerland, with no Bulgarian clients. All three routes describe remote IT services, and whether other work qualifies is unclear
How long One year. Two law firms say it can be renewed once, for one more year, so two years in all
How to apply First a Type D visa from a Bulgarian consulate in your country of nationality or residence, even if you can enter visa-free: one to two months. Then apply for residence in Bulgaria within 14 days of arriving: two to four weeks. Then you get an ID card
Permanent residence No, says one law firm: the permit does not lead to it, and time on it does not count. Not confirmed on an official page
Without a visa British passports: up to 90 days in any 180 across the Schengen area, with a passport issued less than 10 years before you arrive and valid three months beyond the day you leave. American passports: 90 days or less, with the same three months' validity
Tax residency More than 183 days in any 12 months, or your centre of vital interests in Bulgaria

Come now Fine Avoid

Late spring to early autumn is the easy stretch. July and August average highs of about 28 degrees, and August has the fewest rain days. Winter is cold: January averages 3.5 degrees by day and -3.9 at night, and nights are below freezing from December to February. May and June are the wettest months, with 73mm and 82mm. We found no source on tourist seasons or events that fill hotels. The averages are 1991 to 2020 normals, read from Wikipedia's table.

94 Mbps Typical download

Connectivity

The internet, honestly

That is Bulgaria's median fixed download, 94.44 Mbps in March 2026, from Ookla's index as relayed by Wikipedia. Mobile was faster, at 221 Mbps. There is no figure for Sofia.

We found nothing on working from cafes. For daily calls, ask the landlord what line the flat has before you sign, or pay for a desk.

Things the other guides leave out

  • Only Yellow taxis at the airport

Only Yellow taxis are authorised at Sofia airport, and the US says drivers often overcharge. Ask the fare first

  • CBD is illegal

Marijuana and CBD products are illegal, and drug penalties are severe. The UK government added warnings about cannabis arrests at airports in June 2025

  • Carry proof of insurance

Visitors must have medical insurance for the whole stay and may be asked to show it at the border

  • Name your transport card

A personalised monthly card is EUR 25.50, against EUR 35.50 for one that is not

  • D visa first

You need a Type D visa from a consulate before you can apply for the nomad permit, even if you can enter visa-free

  • Drink-driving

The limit is as low as 0.05 per cent blood alcohol, and you can be jailed on the spot
