City guides South Korea

Seoul

  • Quarter-gigabit home broadband
  • Baekban lunch under KRW 9000
  • Workation visa now permanent

A median home download of 258 Mbps, a KRW 8,654 stew-and-rice set lunch and a nomad visa that became permanent in June 2026. The catch is the bar: a remote worker aged 35 or over living in Seoul needs KRW 104.83 million a year. Rents are quoted on top of a KRW 10 million deposit, and the visa gives no direct route to staying for good.

Every figure checked 15 Oct 2026

  • About KRW 678,000 a month Average rent, one-room, Mapo

How far English gets you Patchy. South Korea ranks 48th on the EF English Proficiency Index 2025, with 522 against a global average of 488, and Seoul scores higher, at 550. English covers signs, subway announcements and the big chains. It stops at landlords and lease paperwork, phone and bank sign-ups, the immigration office and small restaurants. Taxi drivers tend to speak little or no English, so carry your destination written in Korean.

Honestly

Is this your kind of place?

It suits you if

Salaried employees of foreign companies, with at least a year in the job, who are 18 to 34 and earn KRW 78.62 million a year or more, or 35 and over on KRW 104.83 million. It also suits anyone happy to live outside the capital region, where the bars are lower. You get very fast broadband, cheap everyday meals from KRW 3,800 for gimbap, a mature coworking market and a city where violent and property crime is rare.

It does not suit you if

Freelancers with a list of clients and no employer letter: the visa is written around employment by, or ownership of, a foreign company, and freelancers are not mentioned. Without it you get 90 days and no right to work. Anyone who will not deal with Korean-language leases and deposits in the millions of won. Anyone who hates heat or cold: July and August bring over 750mm of rain between them and highs of 29 to 30 degrees, and nights are below freezing from December to February. And anyone who uses cannabis anywhere: people have been detained on drug tests alone.

Come now Fine Avoid

April, May and October are the months. July and August are the monsoon: 414mm of rain in July and 348mm in August, with highs of 29 to 30 degrees. GOV.UK says the typhoon season normally runs from June to November, with flooding and landslides possible mainly in June and July. Winter is dry but cold: January averages a high of 2.1 degrees and a low of minus 5.5, and nights are below freezing from December to February. Yellow dust blows in sporadically in spring. The averages are the Korea Meteorological Administration's 1991 to 2020 normals, read from Wikipedia's table. There is no checked figure for which months tourists crowd or how prices swing.

258 Mbps Typical download

Connectivity

The internet, honestly

That is South Korea's median fixed download from Ookla's index for March 2026, read second-hand from Wikipedia. The mobile median is faster still, at 265 Mbps. There is no Seoul figure.

Speed is not the problem here. Seating time, noise and taking video calls in a busy cafe are, and there is no source on cafe wifi or how long you can sit. For days with calls, pay for a coworking day pass, at KRW 15,000 to 25,000.

    Book this

The rest

Things the other guides leave out

  • Rents assume a deposit

Seoul's quoted one-room rents, KRW 640,000 on average, are on a KRW 10 million deposit. Budget for the deposit as well as the rent

  • Poppy seeds are illegal

Including bagel seasoning, and they can lead to criminal charges. Some prescription medicines need approval from the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety before you bring them

  • Drug tests alone

British nationals have been detained on the basis of drug tests alone, and even small amounts of cannabis can mean a long jail term

  • No protests

Foreigners may not take part in political activity, including demonstrations

  • Civil defence drills

Sirens sound, traffic must stop and people may be sent into metro stations or basements. Follow officials' instructions

  • Carry ID

It is a legal requirement, though checks are rare. Visa holders staying over 91 days need a residence card within 90 days and must report a move within 14
