Marrakech

  • Winter sun near UK time
  • No nomad visa
  • French beats English

Winter sun an hour or less from UK time, and one-beds in Gueliz and Hivernage listed at MAD 6,950 to 10,000 a month. The catch is the paperwork: Morocco has no remote work visa, so people stay on the 90-day tourist allowance. Past that, you need a police extension or a residence card, in French, with no published income test.

Every figure checked 15 Oct 2026

  • MAD 6,950 to 10,000 a month Asking rent, one-bed, Gueliz and Hivernage
  • MAD 50 to 80 Plat du jour
  • MAD 450 Coworking day pass
  • Country Morocco
  • Time zone UTC 04:20 there now
  • Language Arabic and Amazigh
  • Currency Moroccan dirham (MAD), written DH locally
  • Plugs Type C and E, 230V

How far English gets you In the cafes, hotels and coworking spaces of Gueliz and Hivernage, and in the tourist trade of the medina, English gets you by. It stops at the landlord, the police station (where visa extensions happen), the doctor's receptionist, taxis and anything administrative. There you need French or Darija, Moroccan Arabic. Rental listings and most legal texts are in French only.

Honestly

Is this your kind of place?

It suits you if

Someone doing a two or three-month winter or spring stint inside the visa-free window, who wants sun and a clock that matches the UK's in winter and is an hour behind it in summer, for easy UK and EU calls. Best if you speak some French, are happy working from a paid desk, and treat the medina as somewhere to visit rather than live.

It does not suit you if

Anyone wanting a legal long-term remote work status: there isn't one, and a residence card is police-station paperwork with no published income figure. Same-sex relations are a crime, with up to three years in prison. The US government says women travelling alone are particularly vulnerable to harassment and assault. July and August have average highs of 37 to 38 degrees. Alcohol is legal only in licensed venues. In the medina you will be hustled on your way home. If you need things to work in English without negotiation, this is the wrong city.

Money

What everything else costs

Coworking hot desk MAD 600 to 1,500 a month A city-wide range from a jobs blog, not an operator's own price

Paperwork

Can you legally stay?

Official name None. Morocco has no digital nomad or remote work visa. The nearest thing is a residence card (carte d'immatriculation) as a "visiteur" under Law 02-03
Minimum income None set. The visitor card asks you to prove you can live on your own resources, and the law gives no figure
Evidence Proof of your own resources, plus an undertaking not to work in Morocco without authorisation. Which documents, and over what period, was not checked
Who qualifies Unclear for employees of foreign companies, freelancers and company owners alike. The law does not deal with remote work for a foreign payer
How long The residence card runs one to ten years, and is renewable
Permanent residence A carte de residence, after at least four years' continuous lawful residence
Citizenship After five years' habitual and regular residence, with knowledge of Arabic or Amazigh, good conduct and enough means
Without a visa British passports: up to 90 days for tourism, and to stay longer you ask for an extension at a Moroccan police station. American passports: under 90 days
Tax residency More than 183 days in any 365, or straight away if your permanent home or the centre of your economic interests is in Morocco

Where to live

Where to base yourself

  • Gueliz

About MAD 6,950 for the one one-bed found; furnished two-beds MAD 10,000 to 12,500

The new town: galleries, cafes, the Cowork in Marrakech space and the train station within reach

The catch Real furnished one-beds are scarce. Most long lets are two-beds at MAD 10,000 or more, so you pay for space you don't need

  • Hivernage

    One-beds about MAD 7,000 to 10,000; furnished two-beds mostly MAD 9,500 to 16,500

Gated residences with pools, quiet streets, and Spaces coworking at M Avenue next door

The catch The dearest quarter in the city, and it feels like a hotel district, not a neighbourhood

  • Medina (riads)

    Rent not checked

The UNESCO-listed old city, with the souks and Jemaa el-Fnaa on your doorstep

The catch The UK government says pickpocketing is common in medinas and bogus guides harass visitors there, and you deal with it every time you walk home

  • Kasbah and Mellah

    Rent not checked

The quieter, mainly residential southern end of the old city, near the Bahia and El Badi palaces

The catch The same medina hassle, alleys with no car access, and a long taxi ride to the coworking spaces in Gueliz and Hivernage

Come now Fine Avoid

March, April, May, October and November are the months. July and August average 37 to 38 degrees in the day, and the record is 49.6. Winter days are mild, around 19 to 21 degrees, but nights drop to 6 to 8. Rain is light all year: March is the wettest month, with 35mm. Ramadan starts in February 2027. The averages are Wikipedia's table for Menara Airport, 1991 to 2020, citing NOAA.

56 Mbps Typical download

Connectivity

The internet, honestly

That is Morocco's median fixed download, 56.27 Mbps, from Ookla data for the last quarter of 2025, reported by a news site. There is no Marrakech figure. Morocco launched 5G in November 2025, according to a travel blog.

Cafe wifi is not something to plan a call day around, and riads in the medina sit behind thick walls on shared connections. For calls, pay for a desk. Spaces at M Avenue is the one operator with published prices.

The rest

Things the other guides leave out

  • Overstaying means a judge

Stay past your 90 days without a police extension and you must go before a judge before you can leave

  • Check your passport

It needs three months' validity from arrival, and damaged passports have been refused entry

  • Drink only in licensed places

Drinking anywhere else, including the street, is illegal and you can be arrested. Methanol-laced drinks have killed people

  • Drones need permission

You need approval from the Directorate General for Civil Aviation, or face fines and confiscation

  • Bring the 1968 driving permit

The 1949 International Driving Permit is no longer accepted, and you need a Moroccan licence if you stay over a year

  • Morocco is on GMT now

Since 20 September 2026 the clocks stay on GMT (UTC+0) all year. That is UK time in winter and an hour behind it in summer, and one to two hours behind Paris and Madrid
