City guides Hungary

Budapest

  • Flat 15 per cent tax
  • Two years then out
  • Baths after work

An EU capital with a 15 per cent flat income tax, a HUF 8,950 monthly pass that covers every tram, metro and bus in the city, and thermal baths to end the working day. The White Card makes it legal for two years. Then it ends: the law says it can never become residence, and nobody can come with you on it.

Every figure checked 2 Oct 2026

  • HUF 260,000 a month Median asking rent
  • HUF 8,950 Monthly transport pass
  • HUF 2,310 Napi menu
  • Country Hungary
  • Time zone UTC+2 06:21 there now
  • Language Hungarian
  • Currency Hungarian forint (HUF)
  • Plugs Type C and F, 230V

How far English gets you Better than its reputation. Hungary scores 590 on the EF English Proficiency Index, 22nd in the world and in the High band. It works in central Pest cafes, coworking spaces and with younger people. It stops at the paperwork: the immigration office, the tax authority, district offices and landlords outside the expat letting market all work in Hungarian.

Honestly

Is this your kind of place?

It suits you if

Employees of a foreign company, or owners of a profitable one, earning EUR 3,000 a month net or more, who want one or two good years in a central European capital. It suits people who like real seasons, cheap and complete public transport and a deep cafe culture, and who are happy renting in Pest's central districts or across the river in Buda.

It does not suit you if

Anyone hoping to settle, because the White Card stops at two years and cannot turn into residence. Couples and families, because your partner cannot join you on it. Freelancers without a company, who have no clear route at all. Anyone who might take a single Hungarian client or buy into a local business, since either gets the card withdrawn. And anyone who hates winter: from November to February the city is grey, with highs of 3 to 9 degrees.

Where to live

Where to base yourself

  • District VI, Terezvaros

    HUF 290,000 median asking

Central Pest around Andrassy ut and the Oktogon, with two metro lines, cafes and the Opera

The catch The most expensive district in the latest data, and noisy around Liszt Ferenc ter and the Grand Boulevard

  • District VII, Erzsebetvaros

    HUF 249,000 median asking

Cheaper than VI, walking distance to everything, and the densest cafe and coworking scene

The catch It contains the ruin-bar district: stag groups and street noise until late at weekends. See the flat on a Friday night before you sign

  • District XI, Ujbuda

    HUF 285,000 median asking

The calmer, greener Buda side, still on metro line 4 to the centre

The catch Almost as expensive as VI, with the nightlife and coworking a river crossing away

  • District XIII, Ujlipotvaros

    HUF 270,000 median asking

A grid of Bauhaus blocks by the Danube and Margaret Island, popular with long stays

The catch Away from the river it turns into an office corridor with little street life, and it is sleepy at night

Timing

The best time to come

  • Jan 3C highs, grey
  • Feb 6C, still dark
  • Mar 11C, thawing
  • Apr 18C, spring
  • May 23C, long evenings
  • Jun 26C, busy
  • Jul 28C, wettest, Grand Prix
  • Aug 28C, Sziget crowds
  • Sep 22C, settled
  • Oct 16C, mild
  • Nov 9C, short days
  • Dec 4C, dark early

Come now Fine Avoid

April, May, September and October are the months. July and August are hot in flats that rarely have air conditioning, and busy: the Hungarian Grand Prix and the Sziget festival both land then. Winter is the real test, with highs of 3 to 6 degrees from December to February.

Connectivity

The internet, honestly

That is the median fixed download for Hungary as a whole, from Ookla data for March 2026. There is no Budapest-only figure. Ask the landlord what the line is before you sign.

There is no reliable source on how cafes treat laptops, and coworking is cheap enough not to gamble on it: a day at Kaptar is from HUF 5,200 plus VAT, and a month of unlimited access at Impact Hub is HUF 55,000 plus VAT.

Work

Remote roles open to someone in Hungary

A remote job is not in any one city. These are roles whose employer will hire someone living here, pulled from the board as you load the page.

    HUF 2,310

  • Szentendre

    HUF 9,450 county pass

A Danube artists' town at the end of the H5 suburban line. The city pass only covers the part inside Budapest; the Pest county pass covers the whole ride

  • Margaret Island

    Free

Gardens, a riverside running track and lidos between Buda and Pest

The rest

Things the other guides leave out

  • The White Card is a dead end

Two years at most, and holders may not be granted a national residence card

  • Nobody comes with you

Family reunification is excluded. Each person must qualify alone

  • Not even a share

Owning any share in a Hungarian company gets the card withdrawn, not only Hungarian clients

  • Buy the pass

Single tickets rose to HUF 500 in June 2025 while the monthly pass stayed at HUF 8,950

  • The county pass works in the city

Since March 2024 the Pest county pass is valid on BKK services too, and it covers day trips out

  • Gellert is shut

The Gellert Baths closed on 1 October 2025 and are due to reopen in 2028
