Who each one suits

From each city guide, word for word.

Malaga

It suits

Remote workers who want a mild winter in a real city rather than a resort: winter highs at the airport are about 17 degrees. It suits anyone who clears Spain's telework visa bar of EUR 2,442 a month gross and is happy to pay for a desk, because most of the coworking spaces are in the old town, within walking distance of each other. City buses are cheap for now, at EUR 23.95 a month for unlimited trips.

It doesn't suit

Anyone hoping Malaga is a cheap Spanish city. Average rents rose about 11 per cent in a year to early 2026, in parts of the city local households spend over 40 per cent of their income on rent, and new leases have no rent cap. New tourist flats are frozen across the whole city, so the mid-term rental market is tight. And anyone who hates heat: July and August average highs of about 31 degrees, and summer brings heat warnings and wildfire risk.

Lisbon

It suits

You want a European base that works for a London or New York working day, you would rather eat in a tasca than a restaurant, and you are coming for at least a season rather than a fortnight. It rewards staying: the third month is better than the first, because by then you have a market, a cafe and a couple of people, and you are no longer paying tourist prices for anything.

It doesn't suit

You are on a tight budget, or you want to work from cafes all day. Lisbon is no longer cheap — rents have gone up faster than almost anywhere in Europe and you are competing with people earning in dollars. And it is not a laptop city: the cafes tolerate you, they do not want you. If you cannot afford a desk somewhere, you will have a worse time here than the internet suggests. Come for the winter and the flat will be colder than you think.
