London

  • No language barrier
  • Six months as a visitor
  • Expensive but worth it

If you hold a British passport, London is simply home and you need nothing. This page is mainly for everyone else. There is no digital nomad visa, but a visitor can stay up to six months and the rules let you work remotely for an employer overseas, as long as that is not the main reason for the trip. The catch is the bill: an average one-bed in Hackney, Tower Hamlets or Lambeth costs GBP 1,882 to 2,001 a month, and visitor time leads nowhere.

Every figure checked 15 Oct 2026

  • GBP 2,001 a month Rent, one-bed, Hackney
  • GBP 171.70 Monthly Travelcard, Zones 1-2
  • GBP 3.85 to 4.25 Meal deal
  • Country United Kingdom
  • Time zone UTC+1 06:22 there now
  • Language English
  • Currency Pound sterling (GBP)
  • Plugs Type G, 230V

How far English gets you Everything works in English: leases, banks, the NHS, HMRC and every public service. There is no point where the language stops. The friction is admin. Without a UK address and a credit history, renting a flat and opening a bank account are slow. And a visitor cannot take a UK job or do work for UK clients while here.

Honestly

Is this your kind of place?

It suits you if

English-speaking employees of overseas companies who want a few months in a world city with no language barrier. A GBP 20 ETA is a one-off formality, and the rules say outright that you may work remotely for your employer abroad. It suits anyone paid in a currency that holds its own against the pound who values culture, transport, and working hours that overlap with both Europe and the US East Coast. And it suits British passport holders, who simply live here.

It does not suit you if

Anyone who wants a digital nomad visa, a residence permit or a path to settling. There is no such route, visitor time counts for nothing, and the government has said settlement will move from five to ten years even on real work visas. Anyone on a budget: an average one-bed in the areas people want runs GBP 1,882 to 2,001 a month before bills, plus GBP 171.70 for a Zones 1-2 Travelcard and GBP 289 or more for a coworking desk. Anyone who needs sun: October to January bring 11 or so rain days a month. And freelancers who serve UK clients, who cannot do that work here as visitors.

Paperwork

Can you legally stay?

British passports You need nothing. It is home: no visa, no ETA, no time limit and full right to work. The rest of this section is for everyone else
Official name No digital nomad visa. You come as a Standard Visitor, or with an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) if your passport is visa-free
What you may do The Immigration Rules (Appendix Visitor, PA 4(h)) let a visitor work remotely for their employment overseas, provided that is not the main purpose of the visit. Work for a UK customer must be done outside the UK (PA 4(g))
Who qualifies Employees of an overseas employer: yes, within that limit. Freelancers and owners of a foreign company: unclear. The rule says "employment overseas", and no official guidance says whether self-employment counts
Minimum income None. You must be able to support yourself, but no figure is published
How long Up to six months per visit. It cannot be extended or turned into residence
ETA GBP 20. Valid for two years or until your passport expires, whichever comes first, for any number of trips. Required for Americans since 8 January 2025 and for Europeans since 2 April 2025
Permanent residence None. Visitor time does not count. On 20 November 2025 the Home Secretary said the standard wait for settlement will move from five years to ten, with no start date yet
Citizenship Not from visitor status
Without a visa British passports: it is home, no limit. American passports: up to six months per visit, with a GBP 20 ETA
Tax residency 183 days or more in the UK tax year, which runs 6 April to 5 April. Having your only home in the UK for 91 days in a row, with at least 30 days there in the tax year, can also do it, and the full Statutory Residence Test can make you resident on far fewer days

Where to live

Where to base yourself

  • Hackney (Dalston, London Fields, Clapton)

    GBP 2,001 a month, average one-bed

Dense cafe, bar and canal-side life, the default East London base for creative work

The catch The dearest of these four for a one-bed, and Hackney's all-property average (GBP 2,658) is well above London's (GBP 2,332)

  • Tower Hamlets (Bethnal Green, Whitechapel, Bow)

    GBP 1,992 a month, average one-bed

Close to the City and Shoreditch, and residents get into the Tower of London for GBP 1 on the day, with proof of address

The catch Almost as dear as Hackney, but grittier, with heavy traffic around the main roads

  • Lambeth (Brixton, Clapham, Stockwell)

    GBP 1,882 a month, average one-bed

A lively south London base with fast Victoria line trains to the centre

The catch One-bed rents rose 3.8 per cent in a year, and Brixton's nightlife makes the centre loud late at night

  • Waltham Forest (Walthamstow, Leyton)

    GBP 1,400 a month, average one-bed

By far the cheapest of the four, about GBP 600 a month under Hackney, with markets and the Walthamstow Wetlands

The catch Further out: a Zones 1-3 monthly Travelcard is GBP 201.60 against GBP 171.70 for Zones 1-2, and expect 25 to 40 minutes into central London

Timing

The best time to come

  • Jan 8.4C, 11.5 rain days
  • Feb 9C, drier than January
  • Mar 11.7C, driest month, 39mm
  • Apr 15C, 8.8 rain days
  • May 18.4C, long light evenings
  • Jun 21.6C, 47mm
  • Jul 23.9C, warmest month
  • Aug 23.4C, 53mm
  • Sep 20.2C, 7.9 rain days
  • Oct 15.8C, wetter, 65mm
  • Nov 11.5C, wettest, 67mm
  • Dec 8.8C, short days

Come now Fine Avoid

April to June and September are the months, with highs of 15 to 22 degrees and around 8 days of rain a month. July and August are the warmest, at about 23 to 24 degrees. October to January are the wettest and darkest: 57 to 67mm of rain and about 11 rain days a month, with highs of 8 to 9 degrees in December and January. Average lows stay just above freezing, even in January and February. The averages are the Met Office's 1991-2020 figures for Heathrow. We have not checked when London is busiest or when hotel prices peak.

Connectivity

The internet, honestly

We have no up-to-date figure. The newest Ofcom figure we could open is an average home download of 69.4 Mbit/s for the UK in March 2023, and it is an average, not a median.

Chain cafes have free Wi-Fi, but a full working day on one coffee is not the norm, and calls in a busy cafe do not work. If your day has calls in it, budget for a desk: WeWork from GBP 40 a day or GBP 289 a month, or Work.Life from GBP 35 a day.

The rest

Things the other guides leave out

  • No ETA, no boarding

Since 25 February 2026 airlines can refuse to board you without an ETA. It costs GBP 20. Apply before you book. British and Irish citizens do not need one

  • Not the main purpose

Visitors may work remotely for an overseas employer only if that is not the main reason for the trip (PA 4(h)). Do not tell Border Force you have come to work for six months

  • The fare caps do the work

Contactless and Oyster cap Zones 1-2 at GBP 8.90 a day and GBP 44.70 a week. If you do not travel every day, you rarely need the GBP 171.70 monthly Travelcard

  • The tax year starts in April

The UK tax year runs 6 April to 5 April, so a stay over New Year can still add up to 183 days in one tax year

  • Licensed cabs only

The US State Department advises using only licensed black cabs or pre-booked cars, because unlicensed cabs have been linked to robbery and assault

  • Settlement is getting longer

The government said in November 2025 that the standard wait for settlement will move from five years to ten. A guide that says five may soon be out of date
