London vs Berlin for remote workers

How London and Berlin compare on cost, visas, working hours, weather, internet and safety. Every figure comes from our city guides and tools, checked and dated there.

The short answer

  • London Doesn't win on any measure here. See who it suits, below.
  • Berlin Doesn't win on any measure here. See who it suits, below.
Everyday costsEven
What we have checked of rent, a coworking desk, weekday lunches and getting around comes to $2,590 to $3,400 (£1,950 to £2,560) a month in London, against $1,430 to $2,230 (£1,080 to £1,670) in Berlin. Berlin has no checked figure for lunch, which would have to cost more than $360 a month to close the gap.
The visaEven
United Kingdom has no remote work visa, so the choice is about more than income. London: no remote work visa. Berlin: Residence permit for freelance work (section 21(5)), no income floor.
A London 9 to 5Even
Normal hours in both: 09:00 to 17:00 in London, 10:00 to 18:00 in Berlin.
A New York 9 to 5Even
A late finish in both: 14:00 to 22:00 in London, 15:00 to 23:00 in Berlin.
WeatherEven
Comfortable months on our best-time rule: 4 in London, 5 in Berlin. Both are comfortable in June, July, August and September.
SafetyEven
The US State Department puts both countries at level 2. Watch for phone snatching and pickpockets in London; pickpockets, crowds and terrorism in Berlin.

What a month costs

Rent, a coworking desk, a cheap lunch on each of 22 working days, and getting around: the same four costs our budget calculator uses. The rent figures aren't always the same kind of figure (some are furnished one-beds, some are averages across every size of flat), so read the note under each.

The visas

London

No remote work visa

Without a visa
British passports: it's home: no visa, no ETA, no limit. American: up to six months per visit as a visitor, with a GBP 20 ETA

The catch. There is no digital nomad visa. Visitors may work remotely for their employment overseas only if it is not the main purpose of the visit (Immigration Rules, Appendix Visitor, PA 4(h)), and work for UK customers must be done outside the UK. Whether freelancers and owners of a foreign company are covered is unclear. British passport holders need nothing: it's home. Visa-free visitors need a GBP 20 ETA, and since 25 February 2026 airlines can refuse to board you without one. Remote work must not be the reason for the trip, so back-to-back long stays that look like living here can get you refused at the border.

Berlin

Residence permit for freelance work (section 21(5))

Income needed
No income floor; in pounds, No income floor
How long
Up to three years, extendable if the business supports you
What it leads to
Permanent residence after five years, citizenship after five; the three-year citizenship route was abolished on 30 October 2025
Without a visa
British and American passports: 90 days in any 180 across Schengen

The catch. There is no digital nomad visa, so this is a freelance permit, not a remote-work one. Over 45, you must also show a pension of EUR 1,612.53 a month from 67 or assets of EUR 232,204. You apply from inside Germany, not on a Schengen tourist visa, with German health insurance and a Berlin lease.

Level 2: increased caution

Not applicable. The UK government's travel advice is for Britons going abroad, so it has no page for the UK.

Berlin

Level 2: increased caution

UK government
No areas advised against. The UK says terrorists are very likely to try to carry out attacks in Germany. In July 2026 one person was killed and 29 injured when a vehicle drove into crowds at Christopher Street Day, Berlin's Pride.

The US level is for the whole country, as the State Department sets it, and some countries have stricter advice for particular regions.

Who each one suits

From each city guide, word for word.

London

It suits

English-speaking employees of overseas companies who want a few months in a world city with no language barrier. A GBP 20 ETA is a one-off formality, and the rules say outright that you may work remotely for your employer abroad. It suits anyone paid in a currency that holds its own against the pound who values culture, transport, and working hours that overlap with both Europe and the US East Coast. And it suits British passport holders, who simply live here.

It doesn't suit

Anyone who wants a digital nomad visa, a residence permit or a path to settling. There is no such route, visitor time counts for nothing, and the government has said settlement will move from five to ten years even on real work visas. Anyone on a budget: an average one-bed in the areas people want runs GBP 1,882 to 2,001 a month before bills, plus GBP 171.70 for a Zones 1-2 Travelcard and GBP 289 or more for a coworking desk. Anyone who needs sun: October to January bring 11 or so rain days a month. And freelancers who serve UK clients, who cannot do that work here as visitors.

Berlin

It suits

Freelancers with real, documentable clients, such as designers, developers, writers and consultants, who are ready to make Berlin their main home, register an address and buy German health insurance. In return you get a legal, renewable permit with a five-year path to settlement and to citizenship. It also suits anyone who wants a big English-friendly creative and tech scene, EUR 63 a month for local transport across all of Germany, and a city that rewards long stays over short ones.

It doesn't suit

Anyone who wants a nomad visa: there isn't one. Salaried employees of a foreign company: there is no route for you, and 90 days in 180 across Schengen is all you get. Anyone who hates paperwork in German, or wants to land and rent something cheap next week. If you are over 45 without a solid pension or about EUR 232,000 in assets, the freelance permit will likely be refused. And winters are dark, grey and near freezing for four months. If you came for sun, cheap rent and easy admin, go somewhere else.
