What a month costs

Rent, a coworking desk, a cheap lunch on each of 22 working days, and getting around: the same four costs our budget calculator uses. The rent figures aren't always the same kind of figure (some are furnished one-beds, some are averages across every size of flat), so read the note under each.

The visas

Rio de Janeiro

Digital nomad visa (VITEM XIV)

Income needed
$1,500 a month; in pounds, about £1,130 a month
How long
Up to a year, renewable for an equal period; law firms read that as once
What it leads to
Nowhere directly: no route to permanent residence, and the years do not count towards citizenship
Without a visa
British passports: 90 days, extendable through the Policia Federal. American: an eVisa is needed, since 10 April 2025

The catch. If your income falls short, USD 18,000 in the bank qualifies instead. But the visa does not stop you becoming tax resident on day 184, and Brazil then taxes the foreign salary that got you the visa.

How to apply, the fees and documents

Buenos Aires

Digital nomad temporary residence

Income needed
No income floor; in pounds, No income floor
How long
180 days, extendable once for another 180
What it leads to
Nowhere directly: it is a transitory stay. Citizenship needs two years' continuous temporary or permanent residence with no trips abroad, since 2025
Without a visa
British and American passports: 90 days, extendable once

The catch. You apply in person at the immigration office in Argentina, and only passports that can visit visa-free qualify.

Safety

Rio de Janeiro

Level 2: increased caution

UK government
Rio has no section of its own. Brazil-wide: don't go on city beaches after dark, and avoid all favelas, including favela tours. The UK advises against all but essential travel to parts of Brazil, so check the regional risks page.
Watch for
Phones, drinks, beaches at night

Scams, local laws and who to call

Buenos Aires

Level 1: normal precautions

UK government
No areas advised against. Take care in Palermo, San Telmo, La Boca (outside Caminito), Retiro, Florida Street and around the Obelisk.
Watch for
Phone snatching, "mustard" trick

Scams, local laws and who to call

The US level is for the whole country, as the State Department sets it, and some countries have stricter advice for particular regions.

Who each one suits

From each city guide, word for word.

Rio de Janeiro

It suits

People who want a big, beautiful city with the sea at the end of the street, and who will work from a coworking desk rather than a beach cafe. You should earn well above the USD 1,500 a month the nomad visa asks, because Zona Sul rents are not low. It suits someone who will learn Portuguese, live with street-smart habits and plan the year around the dry, 25-degree months of May to August. Britons can try it first on a 90-day visa-free stay.

It doesn't suit

Anyone who wants to walk around with a phone in hand, take a laptop to the beach or stroll the sand at night: the UK government says not to go on city beaches after dark, and both the UK and the US warn of phone theft, drink spiking and express kidnapping. Anyone on a tight budget, because condo fees alone run up to BRL 2,948 a month in Ipanema. Americans who have not got a visa before they fly. Anyone who wilts in heat, since December to February bring highs of 30 to 31 degrees, and GOV.UK says flash floods are common. Anyone who needs life to work in English. And anyone who plans to spend more than half the year there without being taxed on worldwide income. On day 184, Brazil will.

Buenos Aires

It suits

You have hard-currency income and you want a genuinely major city rather than a stopover. Three years of temporary residency gets you permanent status, and the rental market has more supply than it has had in years — freely negotiable, landlords who will take dollars, no guarantor if you pay ahead. It suits anyone whose Spanish is decent or who intends to make it so, and anyone who would rather live somewhere with a life of its own than somewhere assembled for visitors. And it suits people who can hold two ideas at once: that this is a country in the middle of a violent macroeconomic adjustment, and that right now, for somebody earning abroad, that adjustment has produced a stable and unusually good-value place to work from.

It doesn't suit

If you want the number on the page to still be the number in three months, go somewhere else. Inflation is 33.5 per cent a year and every peso figure here will be wrong by Christmas. The exchange-rate arbitrage that made this city famous among nomads is dead — the blue rate beats the official rate by about one per cent, so anyone still telling you to bring five thousand dollars in cash is describing 2023. English will get you fed and will not get you through an immigration appointment. Under the 2025 decree you now need health insurance and proof you can support yourself, and if you leave for six months your residency evaporates. Citizenship still says two years and now says continuous, which means two years without going home.
