City guides Peru

Lima

  • Pacific-cliff capital
  • Sunny December to April
  • Menu lunch culture

A big Spanish-speaking capital with fast broadband, real coworking in Miraflores and San Isidro, and a market lunch for PEN 12 to 14. Peru wrote a digital nomad status into law in 2023, but no source confirms you can apply for it yet, so you come as a visitor. From June to September the sky stays grey for months.

Every figure checked 15 Oct 2026

  • PEN 3,868 a month average Rent, three-bed, Miraflores
  • PEN 634 to 745 a month Coworking membership
  • PEN 12 to 14 Menu, the set weekday lunch
  • Country Peru
  • Time zone UTC-5 00:22 there now
  • Language Spanish
  • Currency Sol (PEN)

How far English gets you No survey of English in Lima was found, so plan on Spanish. Every migration, tax (SUNAT) and transport document checked for this guide was in Spanish only. Landlords and market stalls work in Spanish too. Some places frequented by visitors do publish in English: Museo Larco's price list is in both languages.

Honestly

Is this your kind of place?

It suits you if

Someone who wants a big Spanish-speaking capital and is happy to come on a visitor stay. From December to April highs run at 23 to 27 degrees, with about 165 to 190 hours of sunshine a month. There is real coworking in Miraflores and San Isidro, from PEN 634 a month, and Peru's median fixed broadband was 206.5 Mbps in April 2025. If you like eating out cheaply, the weekday menu is a set lunch for PEN 12 to 14 at a market stall.

It does not suit you if

Anyone who wants a nomad visa. Peru created one in law in 2023, but the latest checkable source, from November 2025, said its rules were still unpublished. Anyone who needs sun all year: from June to September Lima is grey, and August averages 17.5 degrees and about 28 hours of sunshine in the whole month. The two districts you would most want to live in, Miraflores and Barranco, are the two the UK government names for gunpoint robberies of British tourists. And without Spanish, every official process is hard.

Where to live

Where to base yourself

  • Miraflores

About PEN 3,868 a month on average for an unfurnished three-bed; a one-bed is less

WeWork has a coworking building at Jose Larco 1232

The catch The UK government reports gunpoint robberies of British tourists in Miraflores

  • Barranco

About PEN 4,317 a month on average for an unfurnished three-bed, PEN 4,786 in Barranco Tradicional

The Urban Language Exchange meets here every Thursday, at Kokopelli hostel

The catch The highest district average in the Urbania data, and the other district the UK government names for gunpoint robberies of British tourists

  • San Isidro

About PEN 4,213 a month on average for an unfurnished three-bed

The financial district, with three WeWork buildings

The catch The San Isidro Financiero sub-zone averages PEN 5,161, the highest of any area in the data

Come now Fine Avoid

Come from December to April, when highs run from 23 to 27 degrees and the sun shines. From June to September a persistent morning drizzle, the garua, hangs over the city, and August manages about 28 hours of sunshine in the month. It barely rains at all: under 10mm in a year. In 2026 the Senor de los Milagros processions fill central Lima on 3, 18, 19 and 28 October and 1 November. El Nino years can upset the whole pattern. No official figures on the busiest tourist months were found. The averages are SENAMHI's for Campo de Marte, 1991 to 2020, taken from Wikipedia's table.

207 Mbps Typical download

Connectivity

The internet, honestly

That is Peru's median fixed download, 206.5 Mbps, with 177.2 Mbps up, from Ookla data for April 2025 reported by the regulator Osiptel. There is no figure for Lima itself.

No source covers cafe Wi-Fi, so for daily video calls the safe choice is a coworking desk: WeWork from PEN 634 a month, or a Spaces day pass for USD 19.

The rest

Things the other guides leave out

  • Get your entry recorded

Without a record of your entry you may not be allowed to leave until immigration confirms it, which can take weeks. Without an entry record you may also owe an exit fine and face a 15-year re-entry ban. Overstays are fined on exit too

  • Part days count for tax

The days you arrive and leave both count towards the 183

  • Always carry ID

Police can take you to a station if you have none

  • Do not photograph anything military

It can mean two to five years in prison

  • Stay out of demonstrations

Foreigners who join them risk detention or deportation

  • Declare cash over USD 10,000

You must also prove where it came from

Work out whether you can actually afford to go

Every role on the board says which countries you can live in and still take it, so remote means remote.
