City guides Thailand
Phuket
An island with a real Thai town in the middle: Hokkien noodle shops in Phuket Town, beaches down the west coast and a coworking desk for THB 6,000 a month. Where you sleep sets the bill. Furnished one-beds inland in Kathu ask THB 13,000 to 22,000; by the beach at Kata and Karon they start at THB 30,000. You will need a scooter and the right licence, and from May to October the sea flies red flags.
Every figure checked 15 Oct 2026
- THB 13,000 to 22,000 a month Furnished one-bed, Kathu
- THB 6,000 to 8,000 Coworking monthly
- THB 40 to 60 Khao gaeng
- Country Thailand
- Time zone UTC+7 12:22 there now
- Language Thai
- Currency Thai baht (THB)
- Plugs Type A, B, C and O, 230V. Most sockets take several types
How far English gets you Limited. Thailand ranks 116th on the EF English Proficiency Index 2025, in the Low band, with a score of 402. There is no Phuket figure. In the beach towns, coworking spaces, condo agencies and tourist restaurants, English works fine. It stops at the paperwork: an immigration extension, a Thai driving licence, a lease written in Thai or a police report needs a Thai speaker. In Phuket Town's markets and local shophouses, expect to point and use a translation app.
Honestly
Is this your kind of place?
It suits you if
Someone with the savings for the DTV who wants a beach, a gym or Muay Thai camp and a real coworking desk, and who will ride a scooter legally with an international driving permit. Living inland in Kathu or Chalong, at THB 13,000 to 25,000 for a furnished one-bed, makes it workable on a modest budget. It suits a winter base best: December to March is dry.
It does not suit you if
Anyone who won't ride a scooter. No monthly pass found; TAT mentions day passes but gives no price. The Smart Bus costs THB 50 to 170 a ride, and in May 2026 a foreign embassy warned of 'zero tolerance' in Phuket: unlicensed drivers to be prosecuted 'without exception', and visas may be revoked in serious cases. Anyone who wants the beach on a budget: one-beds in Kata, Karon and Bang Tao ask THB 25,000 to 65,000. Anyone here for the sea from May to October, when it rains on 16 to 19 days a month and red flags fly. Anyone who needs a ready-made nomad scene: we could not find one meetup with a 2026 date. And since 15 September 2026 you cannot come visa-free for two months to try it. It is 30 days now.

Paperwork
Can you legally stay?
| Official name | Destination Thailand Visa (DTV), Workcation category |
|---|---|
| How long | Five years, multiple entry. 180 days a visit, extendable once by 180, then leave and re-enter |
| Apply from home | Since 31 August 2026 you apply in a country where you are a citizen or permanent resident, with a police certificate under six months old. Applying from a neighbouring country no longer works |
| Fee | GBP 300 in London |
| Who qualifies | Employees of a company outside Thailand, freelancers with a portfolio, and company owners. Embassies set their own evidence lists |
| Where it leads | Nowhere. No official source says DTV time counts towards residence or citizenship |
| Without a visa | British and American passports: 30 days, cut from 60 on 15 September 2026. Only two land-border entries a calendar year |
| Tax residency | 180 days or more in a calendar year. Foreign income earned while resident is taxed when you bring it into Thailand, that year or later |
| Work done here | Work done physically in Thailand is Thai-source income, whoever pays you. Working from a beach does not change that, and neither does the DTV |
Where to live
Where to base yourself
-
Kathu
THB 13,000 to 22,000 asking for most furnished one-bedsThe cheapest and deepest one-bed stock on the island, between Patong and Phuket Town
The catch Kathu town is inland with no beach, so you ride or pay for rides over the hill to the sea. Patong is in Kathu district too, so check where a "Kathu" listing really is
-
Rawai
THB 28,000 asking, on the one listing checkedThe southern tip, with Grind Time coworking and Rawai Seafood Market on the doorstep
The catch Dearer than inland: the one Rawai one-bed checked asks more than the THB 13,000 to 22,000 most Kathu one-beds ask
-
Kata and Karon
THB 30,000 to 40,000 asking, up to THB 51,300The best swimming-beach base on the west coast
The catch The dearest one-beds checked, and Kata and Karon are where tourists drown in the monsoon months
-
Phuket Town
Not checked: no individual listings were looked atReal Thai town life: Hokkien noodle shops, the Sunday walking street and the free Dragon Line shuttle round the old town
The catch No beach, and no coworking space in town was confirmed

Come now Fine Avoid
December to March is the season. February is the driest month, with 24mm of rain, and highs sit around 32 to 34 degrees all year. From May to October the southwest monsoon brings 237 to 350mm a month, rain on 16 to 19 days, rough seas, rip currents and red flags on the beaches. A local blog puts high season, with higher prices and crowds, from November to April, and low season from July to October. The averages are WMO 1991-2020 normals for Phuket station.
Connectivity
The internet, honestly
We found no checked broadband speed for Phuket, so there is no figure here. Lub d's coworking in Patong advertises only "high speed" wifi, with no number.
Cafes are fine for email, but no cafe speed was checked. For daily calls, pay for a desk. Place Coworking in Chalong is open 08:00 to 23:00, which covers late calls to Europe.

The rest
Things the other guides leave out
-
Ride with a licence
In May 2026 a foreign embassy warned of 'zero tolerance' in Phuket: unlicensed drivers to be prosecuted 'without exception', and visas may be revoked in serious cases. You need a 1968-convention international driving permit, and riding without a valid licence can void your insurance
-
Never leave your passport as a deposit
Scooter and jet-ski firms may hold it over "damage". Rental scooters are often unregistered, too
-
A red flag means do not swim
Lifeguards pulled two Britons out of red-flag water at Nai Thon on 10 July 2026. The UK government says people have drowned in strong riptides
-
Visa-free is now 30 days
Cut from 60 on 15 September 2026, with only two land-border entries on the exemption each calendar year
-
Apply for the DTV at home
Since 31 August 2026 you apply where you are a citizen or permanent resident, with a police certificate under six months old
-
The beach is still Thailand
Work done physically in Thailand is taxable there, whoever pays you
-
Similan tickets have a deadline
They must be issued before 08:00 on the day, with ID. Tours do it for you; on your own, you do it yourself
Work out whether you can actually afford to go
Every role on the board says which countries you can live in and still take it, so remote means remote.
