City guides Portugal

Porto

  • River-city creative base
  • Wet winters and dry summers
  • Ten-year citizenship road

Portugal's second city, with a smaller, walkable centre, the same D8 nomad visa as Lisbon and one EUR 40 Andante pass for the whole metro area. The bar is EUR 3,680 a month after tax. The catches are the rain, about 1,150mm a year and most of it from October to January, and the road to staying: since May 2026 citizenship takes ten years, not five.

Every figure checked 14 Oct 2026

  • EUR 700 to 1,100+ a month One-bed, citywide (guide range)

Honestly

Is this your kind of place?

It suits you if

Someone who wants Portuguese residency on the D8 visa but a smaller city than Lisbon, and who earns well over EUR 3,680 a month after tax and social contributions. One EUR 40 Andante pass covers the metro, buses and urban trains across the metro area. It works best from May to September, when highs are 20 to 25 degrees and there are 3 to 9 rain days a month, so you can work outdoors.

It does not suit you if

Anyone who hates rain. Porto Airport averages 1,147mm a year, with 149 to 166mm in each of October, November, December and January, on 11 to 13 days a month. Anyone expecting cheap rent: asking rents are EUR 19 a square metre in the city (idealista, September 2026). And anyone after a quick EU passport: citizenship now takes ten years for UK and US nationals, and a partner can generally join you only after you have held residence for two years.

Where to live

Where to base yourself

  • Cedofeita and the Baixa

    Rent not checked

The art district: walkable, with cafes, and coworking at CRU Creative Hub and Typographia on the doorstep

The catch Where the tourists and short-term lets are, so it is the busiest and noisiest base

  • Bonfim

    Rent not checked

East of the centre, with more locals and fewer tourists, and still a walk from the Baixa

The catch Steep streets and a lot of old housing. With winters this wet, check any flat for damp and insulation

  • Boavista

    Rent not checked

The business district, with Spaces coworking and the Casa da Musica

The catch Offices and wide roads, with little street life in the evening

  • Foz do Douro

    Rent not checked

The ocean promenade where the Douro meets the sea

The catch Far from the centre and the metro, so you rely on buses

Timing

The best time to come

  • Jan 14C, 151mm, 13 rain days
  • Feb 15C, 98mm, wet
  • Mar 17C, 101mm, mild
  • Apr 18C, 10 rain days
  • May 20C, rain easing
  • Jun 23C, dry, Sao Joao
  • Jul 24C, driest, 17mm
  • Aug 25C, 29mm, warmest
  • Sep 23.5C, mostly dry
  • Oct 21C, rain returns, 149mm
  • Nov 17C, wettest, 166mm
  • Dec 15C, 153mm, 12 rain days

Come now Fine Avoid

May to September are the months, with highs of 20 to 25 degrees and 3 to 9 rain days a month. July is the driest, at 17mm. October to January is the wet season: 149 to 166mm a month on 11 to 13 days, and November is the wettest. Sao Joao fills the city on the night of 23 to 24 June, and 24 June is a local holiday, so expect closures. No official source on the busiest months was found. The averages are IPMA's 1991-2020 normals for Porto Airport, read from Wikipedia's table.

Connectivity

The internet, honestly

That is the national median for a fixed connection in Portugal, from the regulator, for the second quarter of 2026. There is no Porto figure.

If you need a desk, Spaces in the Baixa and Boavista sells a EUR 19 day pass, and Typographia and CRU Creative Hub, both in the centre, list monthly desks from EUR 80 plus tax.

The rest

Things the other guides leave out

  • The checklist is out of date

The UK D8 checklist on VFS (March 2025) still shows EUR 3,280. The real 2026 bar is EUR 3,680 a month after tax

  • Family waits two years

Since Lei 61/2025 (October 2025), a partner can generally join you only after you have held residence for two years

  • Citizenship is now ten years

In force since 19 May 2026. Separate periods of residence add up, but only within a 12-year window. A guide that says five years is out of date

  • Biometric border checks

The EU Entry/Exit System has been live since 10 April 2026: fingerprints and a face scan on first entry, and your Schengen days counted automatically

  • Two rent figures disagree

Asking rents in the city fell 4.4 per cent in the year to September 2026 (idealista), while rents on new leases across Portugal rose 9 per cent in the first quarter (INE). Look at both

  • 24 June is a holiday

Sao Joao, the night of 23 to 24 June, is a Porto municipal holiday, so expect closures
