Insurance review

SafetyWing

Travel medical cover sold as a rolling subscription, billed every four weeks and cancellable whenever you like, which is why it suits people who leave without a return date. The Essential tier is the cheap entry point, capped at $250,000, with about thirty days of emergency cover in your home country; the Complete tier costs far more and behaves closer to real health insurance. It will sell to you after you have already left home, which most insurers will not. It is not the one to buy if you need an existing condition covered or want treatment in the USA on the base price.

The review

SafetyWing built Nomad Insurance for people who are already travelling, and it shows in the mechanics: you can start a policy from abroad, it renews every four weeks until you stop it, and there is no annual contract to sign.

The Essential tier is what most people mean when they say SafetyWing. It covers emergency medical treatment up to $250,000 worldwide, with the USA available as a paid add-on and a limited amount of cover in your own country. The Complete tier is a different product at several times the price, adding routine care, and is the one to look at if you have stopped thinking of yourself as a tourist.

What it does not do is cover anything you were already being treated for, and it is not health insurance in the sense of a policy you keep for decades. Read the Genki entry below if that is what you are after.

What works

  • Rolling four-week subscription, cancel any time
  • Can be bought after you have already left
  • No deductible on either tier
  • Some home-country emergency cover included
  • Complete tier adds routine and preventive care

What does not

  • Pre-existing conditions excluded on both tiers
  • Cover in the USA costs extra
  • Essential capped at $250,000 overall
  • Complete closes to new sign-ups at 64
