City guides South Africa
Cape Town
One of the most beautiful cities anyone works from, with a remote work visa that actually gets issued and, for now, a power grid that has stopped switching off. The trade is safety: it is a city where you think about where you walk, when you hike and how you drive in from the airport.
Every figure checked 2 Oct 2026

How far English gets you English is an official language and the language of business, government and almost every service you will use, so you can live entirely in it. You will hear Afrikaans and isiXhosa all around you, and a few words of either go a long way.
Honestly
Is this your kind of place?
It suits you if
Somebody earning above ZAR 650,976 a year from a foreign employer who wants mountain and sea before and after work, on European time zones. The visa exists and is issued, load-shedding has been off for well over a year, coworking is good and cheap in pounds, and March to April and October to November are glorious.
It does not suit you if
Anyone who wants to walk home alone at night, hike at dawn on their own, leave a bag on a car seat or drive in from the airport on autopilot. The FCDO warns of muggings on Lion's Head and Signal Hill and of targeted attacks on airport routes. Cape Town Central and Sea Point police stations sit near the top of the Western Cape's crime tables, and South Africa recorded 5,427 murders in three months this year. If you want a city you never have to think about, this is not it.

Come now Fine Avoid
Summer here is not the dream it sounds. December to February is dry and busy, but it is also when the south-easter blows, often for days, gusting at 60km an hour and sometimes far more. The shoulder months, March to April and October to November, are the ones locals rate. Winter is wet and the houses are not built for it.
Connectivity
The internet, honestly
Fibre is widely available in the central suburbs, and the thing that used to decide whether Cape Town was workable has, for now, gone away: Eskom reported 490 consecutive days without load-shedding in September 2026. Still ask any flat about backup power, because it has come back before.
Book a desk rather than relying on cafes. Coworking here is cheap in sterling, it gives you a known connection, and it means one less commute on foot.

Things the other guides leave out
-

-
Take the main roads from the airport
The FCDO warns of violent crime and targeted attacks to and from the airport, including on hire cars, and advises the M3 and N2 rather than GPS shortcuts
-
The dams are lower this year
Dam levels were 76.1 per cent on 28 September 2026, against 91.9 per cent a year before. The City status is Early Drought Caution. There have been no water restrictions since November 2020
-
Fees rise on 1 November
SANParks raises conservation fees from 1 November 2026, by about 15 per cent for international visitors
-
Prices exclude VAT
Both coworking operators quote before VAT. Ask before you sign
Work out whether you can actually afford to go
Every role on the board says which countries you can live in and still take it, so remote means remote.
