City guides Spain
Barcelona
A big, fast, well-connected European city where the visa is genuinely usable and the tax deal for employees is one of the best in Europe. The catch is housing: the city is legislating short and medium lets out of existence, and the furnished flat you picture is getting harder to find every quarter.

How far English gets you Better than most of Spain. Barcelona scores 566 on the EF English Proficiency Index against 540 for the country, in the High band. It works in coworking spaces, central bars and with anyone under forty in tech. It stops at the padron office, the gestoria, Extranjeria and most landlords, where Spanish is assumed and Catalan is common.
Honestly
Is this your kind of place?
It suits you if
Salaried remote employees comfortably above EUR 2,442 a month gross who want a proper European city for a year or more. Employees on the nomad visa can opt into the Beckham regime and pay a flat 24 per cent on their salary, the fibre is among the fastest in Europe, the coworking market is deep and cheap by London standards, and April to June is as good as city living gets.
It does not suit you if
Anyone who wants a cheap, short, furnished, no-paperwork stay. Asking rents run about 23 per cent above Valencia per square metre, the city is phasing out its tourist-flat licences altogether, and since January 2026 the medium-term furnished lets that remote workers relied on are price-capped, so landlords have stopped offering them. Freelancers do not get the 24 per cent rate. Cafes will not host you for a working day. If you hate bureaucracy in two languages, or a July with 20 degree nights, go to Valencia.

-
Eixample
About EUR 20.70 per square metre askingThe grid: central, flat, walkable and the deepest stock of flats in the city
The catch Above the city average, and its wide streets carry the city traffic
-
Poblenou
About EUR 20.30 per square metre askingThe 22@ tech district, near the beach and full of coworking
The catch The steepest official rise in the city: new-contract rents up 7.5 per cent in a year to Q1 2026

- Feb Dry, cool, cheap
- Mar Spring arriving, sunnier
- Apr 18C, 228 hours sun
- May 21C, long light days
- Jun 25C, still bearable
- Jul 28C days, 20C nights

Come now Fine Avoid
April to June is the window, and everybody knows it. July and August are not so much hot as humid, with nights that barely drop below 20 degrees. Autumn is warm but it is when Barcelona actually gets its rain, in short heavy bursts.
Connectivity
The internet, honestly
That is the median fixed download for Spain as a whole, from Ookla data to August 2025. There is no Barcelona-only figure, but fibre is standard in the city and a fast home line is easy to get.
Cafes are where to lower your expectations. Spanish cafes have been switching off wifi and restricting laptops in the morning rush since 2024, and a bar that makes its money on EUR 1.50 coffees has no reason to want you for eight hours. A day pass at Itnig costs less than a few rounds of coffee. Budget for a desk.

The rest
Things the other guides leave out
-
Medium lets are now capped
Since 2 January 2026, furnished lets for work or study in Catalonia are tied to the rent reference index. Only genuine holiday lets are exempt. Landlords have responded by offering fewer of them
-
Tourist flats end in 2028
About 10,000 tourist-flat licences expire in November 2028 under a 2023 decree the Constitutional Court upheld in March 2025. Monthly holiday lets will shrink with them
-
Get on the padron
Registering your address with the city is what unlocks free Park Guell entry and is assumed by almost every other process
-
Your passport is now biometric at the border
EES has logged every Schengen entry and exit by fingerprint since April 2026. An overstay is now automatic, and the FCDO says it can mean a three-year ban
-
The transport pass is half price
The T-usual costs EUR 11.40, not the EUR 22.80 on most guides, through the end of 2026
-
Valencia is the comparison
Asking rents there were EUR 16.30 per square metre in August 2026 against Barcelona at EUR 20.10, same portal, same method
Work out whether you can actually afford to go
Every role on the board says which countries you can live in and still take it, so remote means remote.
