Proton VPN comes out of the same Swiss outfit as Proton Mail, and it is the one we would point most people at first.

The case for it is partly price and partly proof. At $83.88 a year it renews cheaper than NordVPN by roughly fifty-five dollars, which over three years is real money. And its no-logs claim is the best evidenced on this page: Securitum has audited it five years running with the reports published openly, and Proton’s own transparency report records 458 legally binding Swiss orders since 2017 with, in its words, no identifying information ever produced because the logs do not exist. More than 140 countries also means your home country is almost certainly on the list, which matters when a bank decides a foreign IP address is suspicious.

Two honest warnings. Its Trustpilot score is 2.2 out of five, with well over half the reviews at one star, mostly about unstable connections, support and refunds — that is a genuinely bad number and we are not going to pretend otherwise, though it is worth knowing Proton solicits reviews there and privacy tools attract exacting users. And if you need a fixed IP address for an employer’s allowlist, Proton only sells one on business plans at around fifty dollars a month, so buy NordVPN instead.
